Progress in phylogenetics, multi-omics and flower coloration studies in Rhododendron

open access: yesOrnamental Plant Research
The genus Rhododendron exhibits an immense diversity of flower colors and represents one of the largest groups of woody plants, which is of great importance for ornamental plant research.

Floral adaptation and modular trait evolution associated with a shift from bee to hummingbird pollination

open access: yesPlant Biology, EarlyView.
By comparing floral trait variation, integration and modularity in two sister species of Neotropical Costus with a pollination shift, we show that, despite pollination syndrome divergence, both species exhibit low floral variation and functional modularity, consistent with pollinator‐driven selection on traits mediating pollen transfer efficiency and ...

The biology of mycorrhiza in the Ericaceae [PDF]

open access: yesNew Phytologist, 1995
summaryIn acid mor‐humus soils of heathland ecosystems fungi are a significant part of the soil biomass. In these organic soils chitin and hyphal wall hexosamines are major potential sources of nitrogen (N). The ability of the ericoid mycorrhizal fungus Hymenoscyphus ericae (Read) Korf & Kernan to degrade purified chitin and the hexosamines, N ...

Soil inoculation enhances early‐phase reintroduction success in two rare plant species

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, EarlyView.
Abstract Introduction Reintroduction for conservation is an important measure to restore populations of vulnerable plant species. However, reintroduction success rates are relatively low. Inoculating reintroduced plants with facilitative microorganisms from native populations may enhance their performance.

Multifunctional Properties of Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) Essential Oil: Antimicrobial, Antibiofilm, and Insecticidal Effects

open access: yesFlavour and Fragrance Journal, Volume 41, Issue 5, Page 1245-1261, September 2026.
Unveiling the potential of Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) essential oil. ABSTRACT This study investigated the antimicrobial, antibiofilm, and insecticidal properties of wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens L.) essential oil (GPEO). The EO was chemically characterized by GC–MS, confirming methyl salicylate as the predominant compound (99.3%).

A New Species of Loxomerus Chaudoir (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Migadopinae) From the Subantarctic Antipodes Islands, New Zealand: Resurgence of a Flightless Beetle Following Mouse Eradication

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Zoology, Volume 53, Issue 3, September 2026.
Loxomerus antipodes Liebherr and Marris, sp. nov. (Coleoptera: Carabidae), is described from the New Zealand subantarctic Antipodes Islands archipelago. Loxomerus antipodes, sp. nov., was considered conspecific with Loxomerus brevis Blanchard, 1853, from the Auckland Islands, but it is diagnosed from that sister taxon based on numerous anatomical ...

A step into the shadows: Evolutionary shifts in fruit structure and dispersal strategies in Asian mycoheterotrophic Ericaceae

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 8, Issue 5, Page 1419-1433, September 2026.
This study examines how the fruits of non‐photosynthetic forest plants in the Monotropoideae (Ericaceae) have evolved into the diversity observed today. By analyzing four Asian species, we identified a shift from dry, dehiscent fruits that release seeds into the air to fleshy, berry‐like fruits adapted for animal dispersal.

Temperature fluctuations controlled episodic rockfall activity in the Rwenzori Mountains (Uganda) during the Holocene

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 8, August 2026.
The alignment between rockfall deposit surface exposure 10Be ages and Holocene temperature records suggests that major rockfall events occurred episodically in response to climatic fluctuations. We conclude that temperature and its evolution enabled mechanical, chemical or bio‐chemical enhancement of fracture progression.
