A modified method for Eriophyoid mite extraction (Acari: Eriophyoidea)

Abstract An extraction method for sampling grapevine mites, especially Eriophyoidea, is described. The protocol modifies previous extraction methods requiring commonly used household chemicals, which are used easily and safely. The plant material is washed in tap water with 2% sodium hypochlorite and 0.2% dish detergent.

Adaptation of Gall Mites (Acari, Eriophyoidea) to Live in Galls

In Europe, more than 350 mites species induce galls on plants (Buhr, 1964) and these species belong to the family Eriophyoidea. These gall mites are almost invisible (0,1–0,3 mm long to the unaided eye) so that the identification of their galls were at first only based on the host plant (Frauenfeld, 1864; Low, 1874).
