Intra- and interspecific predation on the cocoons of Erpobdella octoculata (L.) (Annelida: Hirudinea)

Hydrobiologia, 1988
In laboratory experiments, eleven out of twenty-one invertebrate species and all of the three fish species tested fed on freshly laid flaccid cocoons of Erpobdella octoculata, though predation was only severe from a dytiscid beetle, E. octoculata and the fish species. There was a tendency for more cocoons to be eaten by starved than fed predators. Only

Observations on the Natural History and Behavior of Erpobdella punctata (Leidy) (Annelida: Hirudinea)

American Midland Naturalist, 1970
The life history, fecundity, behavior and feeding habits of the North American leech, Erpobdella punctata, are investigated. There is evidence of an upstream migration in early spring. The size distribution within populations indicates that growth to maturity took one year in a permanent pond, but two years in a stream, perhaps because the stream dried

Relationship between neurosecretion and spermatogenesis in the leech, Erpobdella lineata

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A: Physiology, 1986
Abstract 1. 1. The central nervous system in the leech, Erpobdella lineata, consists of 21 pairs of cell compartments. 2. 2.AF (aldehyde fuchsin) positive α-cells were observed in the buccal ganglion, cell compartment 8 or 9 and the subesophageal ganglion, cell compartment 11. 3. 3.

Descriptions of the Reproductive Organs of Nephelopsis obscura and Erpobdella punctata (Hirudinoidea:Erpobdellidae)

Freshwater Invertebrate Biology, 1985
During the study of the anatomy of mature Nephelopsis obscura and Erpobdella punctata the structure and distribution of the male and female reproductive organs were observed. The gonopores in N. obscura and E. punctata were separated by one and two annuli, respectively. In N. obscura, the multifollicular testes lie in two lateral columns in the form of

The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of Erpobdella octoculata (Hirudinea: Arhynchobdellida: Erpobdellidae)

Mitochondrial DNA Part A, 2014
Erpobdella octoculata (Linnaeus, 1758; Hirudinea: Arhynchobdellida: Erpobdellidae) is a very common and morphologically variable macrophagous predators of aquatic invertebrates. Here we determined the complete mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence of this species, as the first representative of the suborder Erpobdelliformes.

Ultrastructure and significance of the transitory nephridia in Erpobdella octoculata (Hirudinea, Annelida)

Zoomorphology, 2001
In early developmental stages of Erpobdella octoculata two pairs of transitory nephridia occur which degenerate during the formation of the body segments. Because in the ground pattern of Annelida the first nephridia formed during ontogenesis are protonephridia, it can be assumed that the transitory nephridia of E.

Surface ultrastructure and internal properties of the Erpobdella testacea (Hirudinae, Arynchobdellidae) cocoon membrane

Micron, 2017
The Erpobdella testacea cocoon membrane is studied for the first time by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. It has an ovoid form, displays a cambered dorsal side in which various micro-organisms are attached and a flattened ventral side. Symmetrically positioned, 2 opercula occur at the distal ends of the cocoon. The internal ultrastructure

The diet of Erpobdella octoculata (Hirudinea: Erpobdellidae) in two Danish lowland streams

Fundamental and Applied Limnology, 1997
The diet of leeches and the effect of prey size on feeding success were examined using gut analyses of Erpobdella octoculata from two Danish lowland streams. Five weight (size) classes of leeches were examined. For each insect prey found in the guts the width of the head capsule was measured.
