The Erpobdella testacea cocoon membrane is studied for the first time by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. It has an ovoid form, displays a cambered dorsal side in which various micro-organisms are attached and a flattened ventral side. Symmetrically positioned, 2 opercula occur at the distal ends of the cocoon. The internal ultrastructure

The diet of Erpobdella octoculata (Hirudinea: Erpobdellidae) in two Danish lowland streams
Fundamental and Applied Limnology, 1997The diet of leeches and the effect of prey size on feeding success were examined using gut analyses of Erpobdella octoculata from two Danish lowland streams. Five weight (size) classes of leeches were examined. For each insect prey found in the guts the width of the head capsule was measured.

In laboratory experiments, eleven out of twenty-one invertebrate species and all of the three fish species tested fed on freshly laid flaccid cocoons of Erpobdella octoculata, though predation was only severe from a dytiscid beetle, E. octoculata and the fish species. There was a tendency for more cocoons to be eaten by starved than fed predators. Only

Abstract 1. 1. The high content of proline and of bulky amino acid residues and the amorphous X-ray diffraction pattern suggest that much of the protein of the egg capsule of Erpobdella octoculata is amorphous. 2. 2. The sharp thermal transition, the presence of banded fibrils apparently composed of 15 A filaments and the amino acid ...

AbstractThe natural feeding and competitive interactions between populations of Erpobdella ostoculata and Erpobdella testacea were investigated in Lake Esrom, Denmark, during 1979/80. Statistical analysis revealed that the size of the leeches was the main factor involved in resource utilization.

Abstract 1. 1. The ability of two species of freshwater leech to regulate their weight was examined in media between 6 and 900 mOsm/l. 2. 2. Nephelopsis obscura was able to maintain its weight from 100–207 mOsm/l while Erpobdella punctata could regulate between 58 and 200 mOsm/l and at 900 mOsm/l reached equilibrium at 1.8 times its ...

Octopamine in leeches—I. Distribution of octopamine in Macrobdella decora and Erpobdella octoculata
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part C: Comparative Pharmacology, 1980Abstract 1. The nervous and other tissues of the leeches M. decora and E. octoculata were asayed for octopamine using a radiochemical-enzymatic technique. 2. Octopamine was found at mean concentrations of 12–40 ng/mg tissue protein in the ganglionated nervous tissue; lesser amounts of 7.4–19 ng/mg tissue protein were observed in the non-ganglionated

Erpobdella (Dina) parva complex (E. parva, E. dubia, and E. lahontana) were analyzed by species distribution, pigmentation, size, number and position of the labial eyes, tubercle presence, annulus width, gonopore position, and male genital atrium shape. I concluded that E. parva and E. dubia are conspecific, with the priority name of E. parva.

The aims of the present study were to analyze the ovary cord structure and oogenesis in Erpobdella johanssoni under light, fluorescent and transmission electron microscopy and to compare the obtained results with other clitellate annelids, especially with other arhynchobdellid leeches.

The Feeding Strategies of the Leech Erpobdella octoculata (L.): A Laboratory Study
International Review of Hydrobiology, 2003AbstractThe feeding behaviour of the freshwater leech Erpobdella octoculata was analysed by exposing potential invertebrate and vertebrate prey organisms (alive, wounded or dead) to leech attack in dishes, in the laboratory. The fact that E. octoculata is a macrophagous feeder that swallows living prey organisms whole (preferentially Chironomus larvae)
