The role of science in physical natural hazard assessment : report to the UK Government by the Natural Hazard Working Group [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Following the tragic Asian tsunami on 26 December 2004, the Prime Minister asked the Government’s Chief Scientific Adviser, Sir David King, to convene a group of experts (the Natural Hazard Working Group) to advise on the mechanisms that could and ...

High‐Titanium Zircon Rims in Rhyolite – A Reflection of Adiabatic Ascent?

open access: yesGeological Journal, EarlyView.
The ascent of granitic magma from source to emplacement is rapidly achieved through dyking, resulting in negligible heat loss to the surrounding wallrock (i.e., adiabatic). Zircon growth during ascent can record the changing magma conditions including adiabatic cooling and heating, resulting in high titanium rims on low titanium cores without ...

Short-Term Seismic Precursors to Icelandic Eruptions 1973–2014

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2018
Networks of seismographs of high sensitivity have been in use in the vicinity of active volcanoes in Iceland since 1973. During this time, 21 confirmed eruptions have occurred and several intrusions where magma did not reach the surface. All these events

Numerical simulation of lava flows based on depth-averaged equations

open access: yes, 2005
Risks and damages associated with lava flows propagation (for instance the most recent Etna eruptions) require a quantitative description of this phenomenon and a reliable forecasting of lava flow paths.

Forecasting Eruptions at Restless Calderas

open access: yesEos, 2016
Scientists review decades of data on swarms of earthquakes, surface deformation, degassing, and microgravity changes around calderas to determine when such forms of unrest may result in eruptions.

Forecasting volcanic eruptions from seismic data [PDF]

open access: yesBulletin Volcanologique, 1971
An increase in cumulative seismic strain release from volcanic earthquakes prior to eruptions of Bezymyanniy Volcano in 1955–1961 and Sheveluch Volcano in 1964 in Kamchatka, and of Tokachi-dake Volcano on Hokkaido Island in 1962 occurred in accordance with a hyperbolic law. The relationship obtained may be universal for andesite volcanoes.

Interface Engineering in Solid‐State Sodium Batteries: Advances in Materials Design, Interfacial Strategies, and Multiscale Characterization

open access: yesInterdisciplinary Materials, EarlyView.
Since solid‐state sodium batteries (SSSBs) are a promising solution for advancing sodium‐based energy storage, it is necessary to systematically summarize the development process of SSSBs. It focuses on the role of interface engineering in addressing challenges such as materials design, interfacial strategies, and multiscale characterization.

Renewed Explosive Phreatomagmatic Activity at Poás Volcano, Costa Rica in April 2017

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2018
Phreatic and phreatomagmatic eruptions at volcanoes often present no short term precursory activity, making them a challenge to forecast. Poás volcano, Costa Rica, exhibits cyclic activity with phreatic and some phreatomagmatic eruptions separated by ...

Hydrogen Halide Gas Sensors: Active Materials, Operation Principles, and Emerging Technologies

open access: yesInterdisciplinary Materials, EarlyView.
This review considers hydrogen halide (HX) gas sensors across functional materials and principles: acoustic, chemical, optical and nanophotonic. The strong acidity and reactivity of HX gases are discussed as constraints for stability and selectivity of these devices.
