Effect of plasma‐derived extracellular vesicles on erythrocyte deformability in polymicrobial sepsis

International Immunopharmacology, 2018
&NA; Sepsis affects microcirculation and tissue perfusion leading to tissue hypoxia and multiple organ dysfunction. Red blood cells (RBCs; erythrocytes) are typically biconcave in shape, transport hemoglobin‐bound oxygen and are reversibly deformable ...

Deformed erythrocytes in muscular dystrophies

Neurology, 1978
Because of previous reports of a possible correlation between echinocytogenesis and muscular dystrophies, we investigated the time-dependent development of echinocytes in the blood of normal subjects, patients, and healthy carries of Duchenne dystrophy. There was a quantitatively significant increase of echinocytes in patients and carriers.

Ischemic Preconditioning Enhances Performance and Erythrocyte Deformability of Responders

International Journal of Sports Medicine, 2018
This pilot study aimed to evaluate the differential effects of a remote ischemic preconditioning (rIPC) manoeuvre on performance and red blood cell (RBC) deformability compared to a sham control and a placebo setting.

Decreased deformability in aging erythrocytes

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Biomembranes, 1982
Deformability of bovine erythrocytes separated according to density (and age) was estimated by a modified Teitel's filterability test, the centrifugational test of Sirs, and viscosity measurements of cell suspensions. Both youngest and oldest erythrocytes were found to be less deformable than middle-aged cells, a result speaking against any chief role ...

Deformation behavior of erythrocyte ghost

Biopolymers, 1969
AbstractBiological membranes consist mainly of lipids and proteins. At present, the structure of the lipid phase appears to be established, but hypotheses on the molecular organization of the protein are difficult to support. Thus the deformation behavior of whole human erythrocyte ghosts, ghosts after the selective removal of lipids and ghosts ...

Deformation of Erythrocytes in Microvessels and Glass Capillaries: Effects of Erythrocyte Deformability

Microcirculation, 1996
ABSTRACTObjective: The deformation of erythrocytes in microvessels less than 15 μm in inner diameter was analyzed using a microvascular bed isolated from rabbit mesentery. The deformation was compared with that found in glass capillaries. Methods: Human erythrocytes were perfused through two media: first, a microvascular‐bed section isolated from rabbit

Erythrocyte deformability in diabetes and erythrocyte membrane lipid composition

Metabolism, 1990
Erythrocyte deformability was assessed in 40 diabetic patients, 24 insulin-dependent (IDD) and 16 non-insulin-dependent (NIDD), by measuring the initial filtration flow rate of whole blood, isolated red blood cells (RBC), and isolated RBC membranes with the Hanss hemorheometer, and its relationship to the plasma and ghost membrane lipid composition was

Conductometric study of erythrocytes during centrifugation. II. Erythrocyte deformability

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Lipids and Lipid Metabolism, 1995
Erythrocyte deformability was studied by continuous reading of sediment conductance during centrifugation. The decrease in sediment conductivity during centrifugation reflects erythrocyte deformation in the pellet. The degree of erythrocyte deformation depends on the duration of centrifugation and the magnitude of centripetal acceleration.

Erythrocyte deformability and disease

Trends in Biochemical Sciences, 1982
Abstract For human erythrocytes to endure their continual passage through the circulation for 120 days, they must remain deformable and flexible. Here we discuss the factors which may be responsible for premature cell death in some diseases.

High-Intensity Interval Training Improves Erythrocyte Osmotic Deformability.

Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 2019
INTRODUCTION Physical exercise or hypoxic exposure influences erythrocyte susceptibility to osmotic stress, and the aquaporin 1 (AQP1) facilitates the transport of water in erythrocytes.
