A Micromethod for Erythrocyte Osmotic Fragility Determination
American Journal of Veterinary Research, 1974SUMMARY The erythrocyte osmotic fragility test can be used to detect possible effects of toxic chemicals on the red blood cell membrane, which would alter the cell permeability. A rapid micromethod for measuring erythrocyte fragility using special microtitration equipment is described, and the results are compared with a standard macromethod.

Lineation of the Osmotic Fragility Curve of Erythrocytes
Scandinavian Journal of Haematology, 1980Lineation of the osmotic fragility curve by the method of Detraglia et al (1974) may be performed in most samples from a hospital population. Using the lineation procedure, the osmotic fragility may be tested by only 2 solutions of known osmolarity without any great loss of precision or accuracy. The osmotic fragility curve may be described by 2 values:

Flow cytometric detection of erythrocyte osmotic fragility
Cytometry Part B: Clinical Cytometry, 2008AbstractBackgroundHereditary spherocytosis (HS) is the most common cause of inherited chronic hemolysis. The various tests developed for HS screening have many shortcomings. The purpose of this study was to develop a new, simple, reliable test using flow cytometry.MethodsIn this new test, deionized water, a hemolysis‐inducing agent, is spiked to a red ...

Osmotic Erythrocyte Fragility and ABO Blood Groups
Scandinavian Journal of Haematology, 1982In a study of 1008 blood donors a reduced frequency of blood group A and an increased frequency of blood group O were observed in those with increased osmotic fragility of their red cells.

Differential effects of lipids on the osmotic fragility of erythrocytes
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Biomembranes, 1973Abstract Stearic, oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids, the methyl esters of these acids, as well as their hydroxy analogs were tested for their potency to stabilize human erythrocytes against hypotonic hemolysis. The erythrocyte stabilization was affected by the polarity and the degree of unsaturation of the added compound and by the level of ...

Increased Osmotic Fragility of Erythrocytes in Essential Hypertension
Clinical and Experimental Hypertension. Part A: Theory and Practice, 1984The correlation between hypertension and the osmotic fragility of erythrocytes was examined. High osmotic fragility of erythrocytes was observed in patients with essential hypertension and normotensive subjects with family history of hypertension, compared with normotensive controls without family history of hypertension.

The erythrocyte membrane site for the effect of temperature on osmotic fragility
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Biomembranes, 1977The osmotic fragility of human erythrocytes is well known to decrease as the temperature is elevated. The cellular site for the temperature effect was studied by assessing possible roles of hemoglobin and of membrane lipids and by taking advantage of the unique response of camel erythrocytes to temperature. It is concluded that the erythrocyte membrane

Zinc Deficiency Increases the Osmotic Fragility of Rat Erythrocytes
The Journal of Nutrition, 1987Zinc deficiency in rats causes increased osmotic fragility of their erythrocytes. This study was designed to determine the relationship of food intake and dietary sulfur amino acid level to the effect of low zinc status on fragility. Immature rats were fed for a 3-wk period a low zinc diet (less than 1 mg/kg) based on isolated soybean protein or a ...

Erythrocyte osmotic fragility in friend virus-infected mice
European Journal of Cancer (1965), 1970Abstract Erythrocytes from Friend leukaemia virus (FLV) infected mice lysed more readily than erythrocytes from normal mice, on exposure for 72 hr at 4 °C to various concentrations of buffered saline. Increased osmotic fragility could first be demonstrated 15 days after FLV injection.

A computerized method for the determination of the osmotic fragility curve of erythrocytes
Analytical Biochemistry, 1977Abstract A computerized and precise method for the determination of the osmotic fragility curve of erythrocytes was developed. The pH and the temperature, the most important factors for the osmotic hemolysis, were controlled with an accuracy of 7.40 ± 0.01 and 25.0 ± 0.2°C, respectively.
