Haemodynamic effects of erythrocyte transfusion in preterm infants

European Journal of Pediatrics, 2004
The aim of the study was to assess the short-term cardiorespiratory effects of a standard red cell transfusion in very low birth weight (< 1500 g) infants undergoing intensive care. A total of 37 infants (birth weight 920 +/- 230 g, gestational age 27.8 +/- 2.1 weeks, age at study 6.1 +/- 3.9 days) with indwelling arterial lines were studied when 10 ml/

Erythrocyte Transfusion Causes Immunosuppression After Total Hip Replacement

Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 2000
A prospective study of 34 patients undergoing total hip replacement was done to determine whether homologous erythrocyte transfusion causes postoperative immunosuppression. In the transfused patient group (14 patients), there was a reduction in CD3+ and CD3+4+ cell numbers at Day 2, returning to preoperative levels by Day 7.

NEW METHOD OF PREPARING CONCENTRATED ERYTHROCYTES FOR TRANSFUSION

Journal of the American Medical Association, 1956
Concentrated erythrocytes are generally prepared for transfusion by inserting a sterilized trocar through the stopper of a bottle containing sedimented or centrifuged citrated blood and by aspirating either the plasma or the erythrocyte layer. Despite all aseptic precautions, this entails an unavoidable risk of contamination.

Annales francaises d'anesthesie et de reanimation, 2013
Few randomized controlled studies, the only trial design where causality can be established between an intervention and the benefits or harms thereof, have been published on the benefits and risks of a restrictive vs a liberal transfusion strategy. We review the 19 controlled studies on erythrocyte transfusion thresholds published since the eighties ...
