Modeling Human Erythrocyte Shape and Size Abnormalities [PDF]
We present simple parametric equations in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions that provide a realistic model of the shape of human normal erythrocytes as well as of variations in size (anisocytosis) and shape (poikilocytosis) thereof. We illustrate our results with parameterizations of microcytes, macrocytes and stomatocytes, and show the applicability ...

Skin erythrodiapedesis during chronic venous disorders [PDF]
Background: Extravasation of erythrocytes (erythrodiapedesis [ED]) is currently included among causes of skin damage in legs with chronic venous disorders (CVD) and ascribed to venular hypertension.

Erythrocyte microRNAs show biomarker potential and implicate multiple sclerosis susceptibility genes
Background Multiple sclerosis is a demyelinating autoimmune disease, for which there is no blood‐borne biomarker. Erythrocytes may provide a source of such biomarkers as they contain microRNAs. MicroRNAs regulate protein translation through complementary

Shape changes and motion of a vesicle in a fluid using a lattice Boltzmann model [PDF]
We study the deformation and motion of an erythrocyte in fluid flows via a lattice Boltzmann method. To this purpose, the bending rigidity and the elastic modulus of isotropic dilation are introduced and incorporated with the lattice Boltzmann simulation, and the membrane-flow interactions on both sides of the membrane are carefully examined.

Phagocytosis of Legionella pneumophila is mediated by human monocyte complement receptors. [PDF]
We have examined receptors mediating phagocytosis of the intracellular bacterial pathogen, Legionella pneumophila. Three mAbs against the type 3 complement receptor (CR3), which recognizes C3bi, inhibit adherence of L.

This study reveals how vorticity—a swirling flow pattern—enhances platelet aggregation and thrombus formation in high‐shear conditions. Using a custom microfluidic model, it is shows that vorticity promotes vWF–GPIbα interactions and calcium signaling, providing new insights into thrombosis mechanobiology and informing safer blood‐contacting medical ...

Double anterior chamber in a patient with glaucoma and microspherophakia
We report the case of a 16-year-old woman with microspherophakia and secondary open angle glaucoma. The patient presented with a membrane dividing the anterior chamber into two segments without edema or Descemet′s membrane detachment.
