Escherichia coli O157:H7 differs from previously described diarrheagenic E. coli classes (enteropathogenic, enteroinvasive, enterotoxigenic) by distinct clinical symptoms, production of verotoxin (VT) and a specific plasmid. Cattle are the primary reservoirs of E. coli O157:H7.
