Opening mechanisms of the human upper esophageal sphincter
American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology, 1989Our goals in this study were to evaluate the mechanisms operative in swallow-associated opening of the upper esophageal sphincter (UES) and to determine the dynamics of fluid flow across the sphincter. For this purpose, we obtained concurrent videofluorographic and manometric studies of 2- to 30-ml barium swallows in 15 normal subjects.

AbstractCorrelation of anatomical, surgical, manometric, and radiographic observations leads to the conclusion that the normal high pressure zone of the pharyngoesophageal junction is composed of two parts: an annular muscular sphincter in the most proximal part of the upper esophagus and, above this, a complex pinchcock sphincter composed of the ...

Lower-esophageal sphincter function does not determine resting upper-esophageal sphincter pressure
The American Journal of Digestive Diseases, 1977Records of 269 esophageal motility studies were reviewed to determine the relationship between lower-esophageal sphincter (LES) function and upper-esophageal sphincter (UES) pressure. Average and greatest UES pressures were similar in patients with LES pressures less than 10 mm Hg or greater than 20 mm Hg, and in patients with and without ...

[Physiology of the upper esophageal sphincter].
HNO, 2015The upper esophageal sphincter (UES) forms a barrier between the pharynx and the esophagus. When opened, the UES allows the food bolus to pass into the esophagus, as well as permitting emesis and eructation. The basal sphincter tone constitutes a barrier function which serves to prevent reflux and passive aerophagia in the case of deep breathing. Basal

Swallowing and the Upper Esophageal Sphincter
2017This chapter provides an overview of the normal mechanism of swallowing and the neurologic control of deglutition. The function of the upper esophageal sphincter is reviewed in the context of oropharyngeal dysphagia. A pediatric perspective is given regarding the etiology, assessment, and management of feeding and swallowing disorders.

HNO, 2015The upper esophageal sphincter (UES) forms a barrier between the pharynx and the esophagus. When closed, the barrier function serves to prevent reflux and aerophagia; when open, swallowing, belching and vomiting are possible. The closing muscles include caudal parts of the inferior pharyngeal sphincter and cranial parts of the upper esophagus ...
