Endoscopy, 2018
Background Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is the standard method for diagnosis of esophageal and gastric varices in children. In this prospective study we evaluated the use of PillCam esophageal capsule endoscopy (ECE) in pediatric patients.

Esophageal Varices in Children
The American Journal of Nursing, 1972pends on prompt and skillful medical and nursing care. Although a nurse may not encounter these children often, she should be familiar with the problem. Normally, blood from the digestive tract empties first into the portal system, or liver circulation, before returning to the heart via the inferior vena cava.

Cineradiography of Esophageal Varices
JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1964Cineradiography of the esophagus and esophagoscopy were performed on 76 patients with clinically suspected esophageal varices. Varices were diagnosed cineradiographically in 67 patients. In comparing the radiological and endoscopic findings, there was an 85% agreement as to the presence or absence of varices.

The aim of our study is to evaluate the severity of esophageal varices (EV), based on the computed tomographic portography (CTP) measurement of EV in the distal esophagus and to assess the prediction value of EV volume.A total of 53 EV patients examined by CTP within 4 weeks of upper endoscopy were evaluated, the patients were divided into a ...

Evaluation of ALBI, MELD and Child-Pugh Scores as non-Invasive Predictors of Esophageal Varices
The Egyptian Journal of Hospital Medicine, 2018Background: the prevalence of esophageal varices (OV) in newly diagnosed cirrhotic patients is approximately 60-80% and the 1-year rate of first variceal bleeding is approximately 5% for small esophageal varices & 15% for large esophageal varices.

Management of esophageal varices
Current Gastroenterology Reports, 1999Of the consequences of portal hypertension, varices carry the most sinister implications. During life, the risk of hemorrhage from varices hangs like a "sword of Damocles" over a cirrhotic's head. Hemorrhage, when it occurs, expedites the patient's demise, or often itself proves to be the terminal event.

Screening for esophageal varices [PDF]
Two multicenter trials have evaluated the potential of capsule endoscopy as a diagnostic tool for screening and surveillance of esophageal varices in cirrhotic patients. Their results are similar and show that capsule endoscopy has good performance characteristics, although it is somewhat inferior to esophagogastroduodenoscopy.
