Water stress and temperature on germination and vigor of Handroanthus impetiginosus (Mart. ex DC)

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Engenharia Agrícola e Ambiental
Water availability and temperature are among the main abiotic factors that influence seed germination and vigor, since they act directly on biochemical and physiological processes, which result in the production of the primary root. The objective of this

Migration Patterns of Epiphyllous Bryophyte Metapopulations in Amazonian Fragmented Landscape Inferred From Census and Genomic Data

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 57, Issue 5, September 2025.
We examined the long‐term genetic consequences of habitat fragmentation on two epiphyllous bryophyte species in experimentally fragmented Amazonian forests. Using genotyping and demographic data, we found species‐specific responses and metapopulation dynamics in relation to their mating system.

Phenotypic, Floristic, and Anthropogenic Drivers of the Pollen Niche of Amazonian Stingless Bees

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 57, Issue 3, May 2025.
The pollen diversity and composition collected by Amazonian stingless bees depend on their body mass, tree composition, and urbanization. Further, bees have been collecting fewer pollen types since the 1970s. ABSTRACT Stingless bees (Apidae: Meliponini) are major pollinators in the tropics, supporting key ecosystem services.

Plant and frugivore species characteristics drive frugivore contributions to seed dispersal effectiveness in a hyperdiverse community

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 1, Page 238-253, January 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Seed dispersal by frugivores is a crucial step of the life cycle of most plants, influencing plant population and community dynamics. Although very important for most ecosystems, we are just beginning to understand which are the mechanisms driving frugivore‐mediated ...

Revisiting the Narrative of Deforestation in Central and Southern Mainland Early Modern Portugal as a ‘Ruined Landscape’: The Case of Shipbuilding in Lisbon

open access: yesHistory, Volume 110, Issue 389, Page 24-48, January 2025.
Abstract Scholars have largely blamed shipbuilding for maritime expansion for being the main driver of deforestation in early modern Portugal. This article sets out to revisit the origins and reproduction of this narrative by analysing three interconnected elements in a case study of Lisbon's shipyards.

Native forest and proximity to humans are stronger drivers of Brazilian cottontail habitat use than invasive European hare

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 56, Issue 2, March 2024.
Probability of Brazilian cottontail using sites increases with native forest cover and decreases with farmhouse proximity. Increased human proximity to tropical forests and tropical deforestation are currently more relevant threats to the conservation of the Brazilian cottontail in southeastern Brazil than the European hare invasion.
