‘Time’ in tourism: ‘individual time’ and ‘social time’ [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The author does a review of the research into tourist activity and concludes that the particular character of tourist behaviour is reflected best in the study of time budgets. He proposes Max Weber's ideal-type method to be used in the analysis.

Cultivating biophilia: Domestic gardens foster positive emotions towards wildlife, with gardening influence shaped by species' ecological functions

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract Understanding how different types of nature interactions influence emotional responses to animal species is especially important in the context of the biodiversity crisis, as these emotions can shape conservation‐related attitudes and behaviours. Gardening is recognised as one such interaction, although its influence likely depends on the type

Le temps scolaire et la morale sociale

open access: yesTemporalités, 2021
At the end of the 19th century, the role of the school was to make France literate. It was also to give a purely secular moral education. The stakes of the moral run through Durkheim's work on the school, in which he defends the thesis that education is ...

Big Bird: A global dataset of birds in drone imagery annotated to species level

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Drones are a valuable tool for surveying birds, but manually detecting and identifying birds in drone images is costly. We assembled a diverse dataset of 23 865 images of birds captured with 21 different drones across 11 countries. We labelled 4824 of these images, detailing the location, species, posture category, age category, and sex of 49 990 birds

Espaces odorants et espaces olfactifs

open access: yesJournal of Interdisciplinary Methodologies and Issues in Sciences, 2023

Global determinants of home range sizes in felids: Evidence of human disturbance impact

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
This study is the first to demonstrate the influence of anthropogenic factors and species richness in felids on home range size across the entire felid taxon. Felids are a taxon of major interest in conservation biology, and gaining a comprehensive view of their spatial ecology will help derive global conservation recommendations.

Amenable groups and measure concentration on spheres

open access: yes, 1998
It is proved that a discrete group $G$ is amenable if and only if for every unitary representation of $G$ in an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space $\cal H$ the maximal uniform compactification of the unit sphere $\s_{\cal H}$ has a $G$-fixed point, that ...

Dwelling in a post‐fallout landscape: re‐shaping and sustaining life in a former evacuation zone in Fukushima Habiter après la catastrophe : redonner forme au monde et entretenir la vie dans une ancienne zone évacuée à Fukushima

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, EarlyView.
This article explores the activities of daily life in a village neighbouring the TEPCO nuclear power plant in Fukushima. It argues that one of the potentials of taking a dwelling perspective – a phenomenological approach to living within the ecological and social environments – emerges most compellingly within a polluted landscape.
