Essential metal depletion in an anaerobic reactor

open access: yesWater Science and Technology, 2003
The effect of the absence of trace elements on the conversion of a mixture of volatile fatty acids by a distillery anaerobic granular sludge was investigated. Two UASB reactors were operated under identical operational conditions except for the influent trace metal concentrations, during 140 days.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

PENGARUH ECO ENZYME TERHADAP KANDUNGAN LOGAM BERAT LAHAN BEKAS TAMBANG BATUBARA

open access: yesZiraa'ah: Majalah Ilmiah Pertanian, 2022
Heavy metals are metallic elements with high molecular weight. Heavy metals are classified as essential and non-essential. Essential heavy metals are needed in small amounts, such as Fe, Mn, Cu, and Zn, while non-essential heavy metals are heavy metals ...

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Functional comparison of EncB and EncC cargo proteins in iron storage within the Myxococcus xanthus encapsulin

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Encapsulins are protein nanocompartments that play an important role in iron storage. In the Myxococcus xanthus encapsulin system, two cargo proteins called EncB and EncC contribute to iron mineralization. Here, we show that EncB and EncC generate iron‐containing minerals with distinct chemical compositions, suggesting that the composition of stored ...

The Shewanella oneidensis Fic enzyme SoFic targets the switch‐I region of EF‐Tu for AMPylation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fic enzymes mediate diverse post‐translational modifications across all domains of life, including AMPylation. Prokaryotic EF‐Tu can be AMPylated and deAMPylated by the conserved Fic enzyme SoFic. Structural and biochemical approaches were used to characterize the effect of AMPylation on EF‐Tu, SoFic's enzymatic activities, and the enzyme‐target ...

The Aging Gut–Brain Axis: Effects of Dietary Polyphenols and Metal Exposure

open access: yesChronic Diseases and Translational Medicine
Diet provides essential metals, which are required for the growth, development, and well‐functioning of the body. Nonetheless, some natural and human activities add toxic heavy metals to the diet, consequently introducing them to our bodies, resulting in

Placental Lead and its Interaction with Some Essential Metals among Women from Lucknow, India

open access: yesAsian Journal of Medical Sciences, 2011
Objective: The placenta connects and separates two genetically distinct individuals: the mother and the fetus. There is no placental-fetal barrier blocking lead transport, placing the fetus at high risk from lead exposure.
