Risk Combinations in the Risk Analysis and Management [PDF]
The analogies between the risks carried by entities and the physical loads affecting building and engineering structures can be applied in the studies of risks forming groups arranged according to specified definitions.

Interior error estimate for periodic homogenization [PDF]
In a previous article about the homogenization of the classical problem of diff usion in a bounded domain with su ciently smooth boundary we proved that the error is of order $\epsilon^{1/2}$. Now, for an open set with su ciently smooth boundary $C^{1,1}$

An estimate of syphilis incidence in Eastern Europe [PDF]
Eastern Europe experienced epidemic levels of syphilis after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Presently data are less comprehensive outside the European Union (EU) and European Free Trade Association (EFTA).

In this paper, a new machine learning solution for function approximation is presented. It combines many simple and relatively inaccurate estimators to achieve high accuracy. It creates - in incremental manner - hierarchical, tree-like structure, adapting it to the specific problem being solved.

Minimax boundary estimation and estimation with boundary
We derive non-asymptotic minimax bounds for the Hausdorff estimation of $d$-dimensional submanifolds $M \subset \mathbb{R}^D$ with (possibly) non-empty boundary $\partial M$. The model reunites and extends the most prevalent $\mathcal{C}^2$-type set estimation models: manifolds without boundary, and full-dimensional domains.

Amplitude estimation without phase estimation [PDF]
AbstractThis paper focuses on the quantum amplitude estimation algorithm, which is a core subroutine in quantum computation for various applications. The conventional approach for amplitude estimation is to use the phase estimation algorithm, which consists of many controlled amplification operations followed by a quantum Fourier transform.

A refined estimate for the topological degree [PDF]
We sharpen an estimate of Bourgain, Brezis, and Nguyen for the topological degree of continuous maps from a sphere $\mathbb{S}^d$ into itself in the case $d \ge 2$. This provides the answer for $d \ge 2$ to a question raised by Brezis.
