Tracking marine tetrapod carcasses using a low‐cost mixed methodology with GPS trackers, passive drifters and citizen science

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 9, Page 2354-2361, September 2023., 2023
Abstract Drift experiments are essential to understand stranding patterns and estimate the mortality of beached animals. Most studies do not use telemetry technology due to the high costs of this methodology. The objective of this paper is to describe the possibilities of tracking marine tetrapod carcasses with a low‐cost and replicable methodology ...

Forest disturbance and growth processes are reflected in the geographical distribution of large canopy gaps across the Brazilian Amazon

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 110, Issue 12, Page 2971-2983, December 2022., 2022
The proportion of large gaps in the forest canopy varied substantially over the Brazilian Amazon. We have shown that the trends can be explained by geographical variation in disturbance and growth. The frequency of extreme weather events is predicted to increase under climate change, and changes could lead to greater forest disturbance, which should be

Phylogenetic distance controls plant growth during early restoration of a semi‐arid riparian forest

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 3, Issue 4, October–December 2022., 2022
Increased phylogenetic diversity but not species richness promoted plant growth during the restoration of a semi‐arid riparian forest in NE Brazil. Such an effect was mediated by the proximity of the plants with the watercourse, indicating the importance of differences in resource use among plants.

Roadkill patterns in Latin American birds and mammals

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Biogeography, Volume 31, Issue 9, Page 1756-1783, September 2022., 2022
Abstract Aim Roads are a major threat for wildlife, degrading habitat and causing mortality via wildlife–vehicle collisions. In Latin America, the conjunction of high biodiversity and a rapidly expanding road network is reason for concern. We introduce an approach that combines species traits and habitat preferences to describe vulnerability and map ...

Hotspots in the grid: Avian sensitivity and vulnerability to collision risk from energy infrastructure interactions in Europe and North Africa

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 59, Issue 6, Page 1496-1512, June 2022., 2022
We identify the areas of Europe and North Africa that are most sensitive for the specific populations of birds for which sufficient GPS tracking data at high spatial resolution were available. We also map vulnerability hotspots where mitigation at existing EI should be prioritised to reduce collision risks.

Evidence for seasonal cycles in deep‐sea fish abundances: A great migration in the deep SE Atlantic?

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 89, Issue 7, Page 1593-1603, July 2020., 2020
The authors demonstrate a significant correlation between epipelagic primary production and deep‐sea fish abundances at 1,500 m from 2010 to 2016 on the Angola margin. These findings highlight the importance of upper‐ocean processes to deep‐sea ecosystem functioning, and their potential vulnerability to future change.
