Regeneration failure, fire, topography, and climate interact to drive temperate wet forest landscapes into fire traps

open access: yesEcography, Volume 2026, Issue 9, September 2026.
Where early successional forests are more flammable than old‐growth forests, forested landscapes are vulnerable to shifting into ‘fire traps' through positive feedbacks, where fire leads to more fire. These feedbacks are amplified by increased flammability driven by climate change, the presence of non‐native flammable plant species, and slowed ...

Tiny but mighty: Insects can drive carrion decomposition in the absence of facultative vertebrate scavengers

open access: yesEcology, Volume 107, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Scavengers play a key role in recycling animal biomass, yet the relative contributions of insects and vertebrates to this process remain poorly understood. Moreover, understanding whether one scavenger group can compensate for the absence of another is critical for predicting how carrion decomposition may respond to changes in community ...

Wildfire Impacts on Hydrology: A Forested Catchment Case Study in Temperate Australia

open access: yesHydrological Processes, Volume 40, Issue 9, September 2026.
Immediately after a wildfire (Scenario 1), surface runoff increased by 34.65%. In Scenarios 2 and 3, it increased slightly (0.96%), while in Scenario 4, it rose 1.04% then decreased as vegetation resprouted. Evapotranspiration decreased by 10.27% immediately after the wildfire, then increased by 1.58%, 0.27%, and 0.84% for Scenarios 2, 3, and 4 ...

Challenges and opportunities in generating and utilizing environmental data for sustainable food systems

open access: yesJournal of Environmental Quality, Volume 55, Issue 5, September/October 2026.
Abstract Modern agricultural production has detrimental effects on the environment including contributing toward current global climate and biodiversity crises. It is therefore necessary that our agroecosystems, and wider food systems, become sustainable, so that the growing population can be fed now and in the future.

Integrating Ecosystem Service Benefits to Assess Ecosystem Health and Its Response to Land Spatial Structure Conflicts in Anning River Basin, China

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, Volume 37, Issue 15, Page 11186-11206, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Land spatial structure conflicts (LSSC) weaken the actual benefits of ecosystem services by inducing trade‐offs among them, directly threatening regional ecosystem health (EH) and sustainable development. However, most studies have failed to incorporate ecosystem service benefits (ESB) into EH assessments and have overlooked their response to ...
