ABSTRACT While β‐glucans from plants and yeasts have been extensively studied in weaned piglets, studies examining algae β‐glucans are scarce. Thus, the present study aimed to examine the effects of feeding algae β‐glucan in weaned piglets. Male, 21‐day‐old, weaned crossbred piglets were allotted to three experimental groups, which were fed either an ...

Some Properties of Physiologically Intact Mitochondria from Euglena gracilis z [PDF]
Euglena gracilis z cultured in the vitamin B_-deficient medium suffered more extensive digestion and gave higher yield of mitochondria than the cells grown in the vitamin B_-sufficient medium.

The photoreceptor protein of Euglena gracilis
We isolated the photoactive protein Erh, isolated from the photoreceptor of the unicellular photosynthetic flagellate Euglena gracilis. It is a 27 kDa protein with a photocycle resembling that of sensory rhodopsin, but with at least one stable intermediate.

Making fish oils in plants: from alpha to omega
Schematic representation of the biosynthetic pathway for the synthesis of omega‐3 long‐chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. The sequential transgene‐encoded activities required to convert endogenous fatty acids to the longer chain polyunsaturated forms of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid are shown in red.

Dormant states of organisms are easier to store than the living state because they tolerate larger variations in temperature, light, storage space etc., making them attractive for laboratory culture stocks and also for experiments under special ...

Despite its considerable potential as a functional food ingredient, T. obliquus faces a major limitation in protein recovery due to the rigidity of its cell wall. In the microalgae industry, protein extraction typically involves two main steps: cell disruption and protein extraction.

Mapping the evolution of mitochondrial complex I through structural variation
Respiratory complex I (CI) is crucial for bioenergetic metabolism in many prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It is composed of a conserved set of core subunits and additional accessory subunits that vary depending on the organism. Here, we categorize CI subunits from available structures to map the evolution of CI across eukaryotes. Respiratory complex I (CI)

The flow of non‐living resources between autotrophic and heterotrophic ecosystems can impact their ecosystem function. However, ecosystem size is similarly known to influence ecological properties and it is uncertain how the size of coupled ecosystems mediates the effect of resource flows.
