Eumycetoma caused by Curvularia lunata in a dog

Curvularia lunata was cultured from black granules found in granulomatous tumefactions excised from the subcutis of a three year old Medium Schnauzer dog. Draining sinuses were present in some of the tumefactions. Accordingly the diagnosis of eumycotic mycetoma was made. This diagnosis was confirmed by histopathological examination.

Histological findings in 24 cases of pale grain eumycetoma have been compared. The inflammatory response and morphology of grains caused by different organisms are very similar. However the histological appearances of Neotestudina rosatii infections, although reminiscent of dermatophyte mycetomas, are distinctive.

Mycetoma is a chronic disease caused by aerobic actinomycetes and eumycetes which mainly affects the lower extremities. It predominates among farm workers in tropical, subtropical and adjacent zones. Clinically it is characterized by a firm swelling with abscesses and fistulae discharging pus that contains granules or grains of the causal agent.
