The Biogeochemistry of Natural Climate Solutions Based on Fish, Fisheries, and Marine Mammals: A Review of Current Evidence, Research Needs, and Critical Assessment of Readiness

open access: yesGlobal Biogeochemical Cycles, Volume 39, Issue 7, July 2025.
Abstract Several initiatives to conserve, restore or better manage fisheries, fishes, whales, and other marine animals have been proposed as natural climate solutions to sequester carbon from the atmosphere or avoid new emissions. We reviewed the knowledge and uncertainties surrounding carbon fluxes and storage mediated by these organisms to evaluate ...

Temporary Absence of Warming in the Northern Weddell Sea Validates Expected Responses of Antarctic Seals to Sea Ice Change

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 31, Issue 6, June 2025.
We examine Antarctic seal responses to sea ice change using one of the longest population monitoring records of three seal species: Antarctic fur seal, Weddell seal, and southern elephant seal at Signy Island, in the South Orkney Island group. Across five decades from 1977 to 2024, all were significantly affected by temporary changes in their sea‐ice ...

Coupling Genetic and Demographic Data to Reveal Dispersal Processes in Emperor Penguins

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 5, May 2025.
Dispersal is ubiquitous but dispersal rates, range, and behaviors remain difficult to measure. By developing new models combing demographic and genetic data, we propose to unravel species dispersal behaviors and apply our methodology to the emperor penguins, living in the most remote place on earth where measurements of dispersal are nonexistent.

The variability in abundance of eugregarines living in the Antarctic krill [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
The variability in abundance of eugregarines associated with the Antarctic krill Euphausia superba was studied using samples collected from the vicinity of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Bovine Collagen Peptide Improves Hypoxia Tolerance and Anti‐Fatigue Capacity in Hypobaric Hypoxic Environments: A Combined Animal and Human Study

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 13, Issue 5, May 2025.
This study represents the first demonstration that BCP can significantly enhance hypoxia tolerance and anti‐fatigue capacity under hypobaric hypoxia conditions, as confirmed by both animal and human experiments. ABSTRACT Peptides are recognized in functional foods for their biological activities.

Spatial Distribution of Krill (Euphausia Superba) and Other Zooplankton off Queen Maud Land, Antarctica [PDF]

open access: yes, 1986
The Euphausia superba Dana, popularly known as the krill is the richest single species resource of the Antarctic waters and they form the chiefforage for whales, seals, birds, fishes and squids of this ecosystem. Several estimates regarding the magnitude

Comparing trophic position estimates using bulk and compound specific stable isotope analyses: applying new approaches to mackerel icefish Champsocephalus gunnari [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ
Quantifying the tropic position (TP) of an animal species is key to understanding its ecosystem function. While both bulk and compound-specific analyses of stable isotopes are widely used for this purpose, few studies have assessed the consistency ...

Self-maintaining or continuously refreshed? The genetic structure of Euphausia lucens populations in the Benguela upwelling ecosystem [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Populations of Euphausia lucens over the shelf of the southern Benguela upwelling region could be self-maintaining. Alternatively, they could be continually refreshed by expatriates from the SW Atlantic that enter the system via South Atlantic Central ...

Nitrogen and carbon isotopic compositions in Euphausia superba Dana collected off the Ongul islands in Lützow-Holm Bay, near Syowa Station, Antarctica in 1984-85

open access: yesAntarctic Record
This paper is a part of the report on the Marine Biological Research Activities of the 25th Wintering Expedition of the JARE (Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition) in 1984-85, focusing on the feeding behavior of Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba Dana,

Spawning behaviour and early development of the Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba DANA, observed on board R. V. KAIYO MARU in 1979/80

open access: yesAntarctic Record, 1981
During the cruise of the Antarctic Expedition R. V. KAIYO MARU in 1979-80,the rearing of the Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba DANA, was conducted in order to observe the spawning behaviour and the early development. The krills which were collected by a
