In the context of World War II and the postwar struggle for redress, this chapter explores the competing lexical meanings and practices of evacuation. Evacuation emerges as a set of terms—and aesthetic practices—used to disguise the forced mobility of people not away from harm but into it, even in the name of protection and care.
