We know very little about pollination in the Platanthera Rich (Orchidaceae: Orchidoideae). [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
This review of Platanthera pollination ecology shows that there are a number of orchid species in the group without pollinator information. Considerable knowledge gaps were identified even for those species where pollinator information has been reported, and these gaps impact our ability to appropriately manage orchid and pollinator populations, which ...

Local entomologists shine a light on moth communities: The value of amateur records in cataloguing long‐term change

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, Volume 18, Issue 6, Page 1120-1135, November 2025.
Written records associated with museum collections are often underutilised. We use two new macro‐moth collections donated to the University Museum of Zoology (Cambridge) to investigate long‐term change in the United Kingdom. The new collection contained over 32,000 specimens and had an unusually high proportion of larvae/pupae compared to the main ...

Evaluating DNA quality in Coleoptera and Lepidoptera: Impact of fixation and preservation in various trapping methods

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, Volume 173, Issue 8, Page 903-917, August 2025.
We examined how various trapping, fixation, and preservation methods affect the DNA quality of Coleoptera and Lepidoptera specimens. We found that propylene glycol and cyanide vapors effectively preserved DNA, whereas brine provided a cost‐efficient alternative.
