The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

Pharmacological inhibition of the PERK pathway modulates hepatocellular carcinoma growth and immune signaling

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Pharmacological inhibition of PERK in a DEN‐induced mouse model of liver cancer does not reduce tumor burden but alters cellular stress signaling. Despite blocking PERK activity, downstream stress responses, including CHOP expression, remain active, suggesting compensatory mechanisms within the unfolded protein response that may influence tumor ...

Time evolution of face recognition in accessible scenarios [PDF]

open access: yesHuman-centric Computing and Information Sciences, 2015
AbstractUp to now, biometric recognition has shown significant advantages as to be considered a reliable solution for security systems in mobile environments. Nevertheless, due to the short lifetime of biometrics in mobile devices, a handful of concerns regarding usability and accessibility need to be covered in order to meet users’ requirements.

UiO‐66 metal–organic frameworks in biomedicine: From structural tunability to bioimaging, photodiagnostics, and photodynamic cancer therapy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
UiO‐66(Zr) metal–organic frameworks are chemically stable, biocompatible, and highly tunable nanomaterials. Their modular structure enables controlled drug delivery, multimodal bioimaging, and light‐activated photodynamic therapy, supporting integrated diagnostic and therapeutic (theranostic) applications in cancer and biomedical research.

Hydrological responses of a watershed to historical land use evolution and future land use scenarios under climate change conditions [PDF]

open access: yesHydrology and Earth System Sciences, 2008
Watershed runoff is closely related to land use but this influence is difficult to quantify. This study focused on the Chaudière River watershed (Québec, Canada) and had two objectives: (i) to quantify the influence of historical agricultural land use ...

Transcripts enriched in codons that trigger P‐site tRNA‐mediated mRNA decay possess stable mRNA

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
PTMD codons were first described by Mendel et al. as mediators of an mRNA decay pathway dependent on the human protein CNOT3, homologous to yeast Not5. Our findings confirm that PTMD codons destabilize transcripts; however, unlike in yeast, the human pathway specifically targets and slightly destabilizes primarily stable mRNAs.

Pathways and pitfalls: a qualitative study of student experiences in biomedical science education

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Biomedical science students from underrepresented backgrounds face barriers including financial strain, disrupted laboratory access and cultural exclusion. Peer networks provide vital support when institutional systems are difficult to navigate. To create inclusive learning environments and achieve academic success, educators should blend active, hands‐

Spectral evolution of two-layer weak geostrophic turbulence. Part I: Typical scenarios [PDF]

open access: yesNonlinear Processes in Geophysics, 1996
Long-time evolution of large-scale geophysical flows is considered in a β-plane approximation. Motions in an infinite 2-layer model ocean are treated as a system of weakly nonlinear Rossby waves (weak geostrophic turbulence). The evolution
