The IQ‐compete assay for measuring mitochondrial protein import efficiencies in living yeast cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The efficiency of mitochondrial protein import depends on the properties of the newly synthesized precursor proteins. The Import and de‐Quenching Competition (IQ‐compete) assay is a novel method to monitor the import efficiency of different proteins by fluorescence in living yeast cells.

Crp and Arc system directly regulate the transcription of NADH dehydrogenase genes in Shewanella oneidensis nitrate and nitrite respiration

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum
NADH oxidation by NADH dehydrogenases (NDHs) is crucial for feeding respiratory quinone pool and maintaining the balance of NADH/NAD+. In the respiratory model organism Shewanella oneidensis, which possesses four NDHs, the longstanding notion had been ...

Vesta and Ceres: crossing the history of the Solar System

open access: yes, 2011
The evolution of the Solar System can be schematically divided into three different phases: the Solar Nebula, the Primordial Solar System and the Modern Solar System.

Targeting EZH2 reverses thyroid cell dedifferentiation and enhances iodide uptake in anaplastic thyroid cancer

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) lacks iodide uptake ability due to MAPK activation increasing the expression of the histone methyltransferase EZH2, which represses thyroid differentiation genes (TDGs) such as the sodium iodide symporter (NIS). Dual inhibition of MAPK (U0126) and EZH2 (EPZ6438/Tazemetostat) reverses this mechanism, thus restoring TDG ...

Healthy and moribund Zhikong scallops (Chlamys farreri) developed different viral communities during a mass mortality event

open access: yesmSystems
Viral assemblages of scallops are still relatively unknown. Here, metagenomic analysis was used to study virus communities in the gut of scallops to establish the first scallop virome data set (SVD); this contains 7,447 viral operational taxonomic units.

Evolution of an N-level system via automated vectorization of the Liouville equations and application to optically controlled polarization rotation

open access: yes, 2013
The Liouville equation governing the evolution of the density matrix for an atomic/molecular system is expressed in terms of a commutator between the density matrix and the Hamiltonian, along with terms that account for decay and redistribution.

Evolution of Case Systems

open access: yes, 2012
AbstractNew cases may arise by adding adverbs, postpositions, and (rarely) prepositions; by adding existing case markers to other case forms, which results in ‘multilayer’ case marking; from demonstrative pronouns or articles. New case forms may also go back to denominal adjectives and adverbials incorporated into the case paradigm.

By dawn or dusk—how circadian timing rewrites bacterial infection outcomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The circadian clock shapes immune function, yet its influence on infection outcomes is only beginning to be understood. This review highlights how circadian timing alters host responses to the bacterial pathogens Salmonella enterica, Listeria monocytogenes, and Streptococcus pneumoniae revealing that the effectiveness of immune defense depends not only
