Genome-wide identification, evolutionary dynamics, and abiotic stress response networks of the magnesium transporter gene family in foxtail millet (Setaria italica L.)

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science
Magnesium (Mg²+) is an essential mineral nutrient for plant growth, playing a pivotal role in chlorophyll biosynthesis, enzyme activation, photosynthesis, and ion homeostasis.

Decreased cold‐sensing function of the transient receptor potential channel TRPM8 from tailed amphibians

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Despite frogs avoiding low temperatures, examination of four salamander species revealed that none avoided cold and all possessed cold tolerance. Functional analysis of TRPM8, a cold sensor, showed that all salamander TRPM8s had lost their cold sensitivity.

Genomic Characteristics of a Novel Recombinant Bluetongue Virus Serotype 1 in Yunnan, China

open access: yesVeterinary Sciences
Bluetongue virus belongs to the Reoviridae family, which causes morbidity in ruminants. Herein, we report the full-length genome sequence of a recombinant BTV strain of serotype 1 (YNDH/103/2013) isolated from sentinel cattle in Yunnan Province, China ...

Rapid screening of staphylokinase protein variants using an unpurified cell‐free expression system

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
An unpurified cell‐free protein synthesis (CFPS) platform enables rapid functional screening of staphylokinase variants. Direct plasminogen‐activation assays performed in microplate format provide real‐time activity readouts, allowing rapid identification and ranking of variants with improved or reduced fibrinolytic activity without protein ...

Schumpeter and Georgescu-Roegen on the foundations of an evolutionary analysis: The problem of qualitative change, its methodical implications and analytical treatment [PDF]

open access: yes
Despite the frequent references to Schumpeter's work, his own encompassing methodological approach as worked out by Shionoya (1997) has hardly been considered.

Tax evasion in a behaviorally heterogeneous society: an evolutionary analysis

open access: yes, 2014
We focus on the tax evasion dynamics emerging from repeated interaction of three types of taxpayers: cheaters, honest citizens and punishers. By assuming that cultural evolution is driven by material payoffs only, we show that a long overlooked ...

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Evolutionary analysis of DELLA proteins in sweet potato and related species reveals their roles in development and stress responses

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science
DELLA proteins act as master negative regulators in the gibberellin signaling pathway, which controls numerous aspects of plant growth and development.

Mass spectrometry based identification of AMP‐O‐Tris generated by Thermococcus onnurineus Cas10

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Isolated Thermococcus onnurineus Cas10 generates the noncanonical ATP‐derived product AMP‐O‐Tris while in Tris‐containing buffer as identified via mass spectrometry, revealing relaxed nucleophile selectivity under isolated conditions. These findings suggest that multiprotein Csm complex assembly restricts Cas10 reactivity toward canonical cyclic ...
