The evolutionary mechanism of cancer
Journal of Cellular Biochemistry, 2010AbstractIdentification of the general molecular mechanism of cancer is the Holy Grail of cancer research. Since cancer is believed to be caused by a sequential accumulation of cancer gene mutations, the identification, characterization, and targeting of common genetic alterations and their defined pathways have dominated the field for decades.

Evolutionary mechanisms of teaching
Behavioral and Brain Sciences, 2015AbstractWe argue that Kline's analysis does not account for the evolutionary mechanisms that can explain the uniqueness of human teaching. We suggest that data should be complemented by an analysis of archaeological material with respect to what forms of teaching are required for the transmission of technologies over generations.

Selection Mechanisms in Evolutionary Algorithms
Fundamenta Informaticae, 1998The selection operator is one of the main operators in evolutionary algorithms. It interacts with other operators (e.g., crossover, mutation) in a complex way. Consequently, the effects of selection should be considered also together with these operators.

The advent of large-scale distributed systems poses unique engineering challenges. In open systems such as the internet it is not possible to prescribe the behaviour of all of the components of the system in advance. Rather, we attempt to design infrastructure, such as network protocols, in such a way that the overall system is robust despite the fact ...

Evolutionary mechanisms of senescence
Genetica, 1993This paper reviews theories of the evolution of senescence. The population genetic basis for the decline with age in sensitivity of fitness to changes in survival and fecundity is discussed. It is shown that this creates a pressure of selection that disproportionately favors performance early in life.

Mechanisms for Evolutionary Reincarnation
2007This paper describes the effects of adding gene reincarnation to a biologically inspired evolutionary algorithm. When using the biologically inspired part of the algorithm we are able to draw on experience from real life. Reincarnation capabilities, however, must be constructed without any real life experience to guide us.

The Evolutionary Mechanisms of Neurotic Behavior
American Journal of Psychiatry, 1974The authors present evidence that many of the maladaptive behavior patterns labeled as neurotic result from man's retention of archaic responses. This retention is the end product of man's evolutionary history, which has produced a species that, in contrast to all others, requires a long period of immaturity to give the brain time for growth.

Evolutionary causes as mechanisms: a critical analysis
In this paper, we address the question whether a mechanistic approach can account for evolutionary causes. The last decade has seen a major attempt to account for natural selection as a mechanism. Nevertheless, we stress the relevance of broadening the debate by including the other evolutionary causes inside the mechanistic approach, in order to be a ...
