An evolutionary perspective on the mechanisms of immunosenescence
Trends in Immunology, 2009There is an accumulating body of evidence that a decline in immune function with age is common to most if not all vertebrates. For instance, age-associated thymic involution seems to occur in all species that possess a thymus, indicating that this process is evolutionary ancient and conserved.

Relation of an Evolutionary Mechanism to Differentiation
Differentiation, 1975It is believed that new gene products and differentiations arise during evolution by the creation of new members of families of repeated DNA sequences which undergo diversification and take on new functions, while still retaining some common sequences indicating their common ancestry.

Evolutionary Mechanism for Disaggregated Computing
2012 Sixth International Conference on Complex, Intelligent, and Software Intensive Systems, 2012This paper proposes a framework for configuring software agents on distributed system consisting of heterogenous computers. It is unique to other existing approaches for self-configuration because it introduces the notions of differentiation and dedifferentiation in cellular into real distributed systems.

Evolutionary Mechanisms and Diversity in Cancer
2011The recently introduced genome theory of cancer evolution provides a new framework for evolutionary studies on cancer. In particular, the established relationship between the large number of individual molecular mechanisms and the general evolutionary mechanism of cancer calls upon a change in our strategies that have been based on the characterization

Evolution in its modern sense is the dynamical description of a system composed of a vast number of elements whose abundances change over time due to the accumulated interplay of interactions between them. This reasoning applies in a multitude of contexts, be it biological, ecological, economical or social, and gives rise to the observations that ...

Evolutionary Trends in Respiratory Mechanisms
2008As we progress through the vertebrate phyla we see a number of changes in the functional morphology of the respiratory system that offer insights into the physiological systems that control them. We see a switch from a buccal pump powered by branchiomeric and hypobranchial muscles innervated by cranial nerves to a thoraco-abdominal aspiration pump ...

Ecological and Evolutionary Mechanisms
2013A persistent challenge in evolutionary biology has been understanding how coevolution has produced complex webs of interacting species. This chapter investigates the suite of ecological, evolutionary, and coevolutionary mechanisms responsible for generating such network patterns.

Evo-Devo: evolutionary developmental mechanisms
The International Journal of Developmental Biology, 2003Evolutionary developmental biology (Evo-Devo) as a discipline is concerned, among other things, with discovering and understanding the role of changes in developmental mechanisms in the evolutionary origin of aspects of the phenotype. In a very real sense, Evo-Devo opens the black box between genotype and phenotype, or more properly, phenotypes as ...
