Exceptional fossil preservation and evolution of the ray-finned fish brain

Nature, 2022
SUMMARY Brain anatomy provides key evidence for ray-finned fish relationships 1 , but two key limitations obscure our understanding of neuroanatomical evolution in this major vertebrate group.

A genotype of exceptional longevity is associated with preservation of cognitive function

Neurology, 2006
To test whether cholesterol ester transfer protein (CETP) genotype (VV homozygosity for I405V) is associated with preservation of cognitive function in addition to its association with exceptional longevity. We studied Ashkenazi Jews with exceptional longevity (n = 158; age 99.2 +/- 0.3 years) for the associations of CETP VV genotype and lipoprotein ...

A review of exceptional preservation in fossil ostracods (Ostracoda, Crustacea)

Marine Micropaleontology, 2022
Abstract Ostracods are the most abundantly preserved arthropod group in the fossil record, but they are almost entirely represented only by their calcitic carapaces. In over two hundred years of fossil ostracod research, only about 33 occurrences of fossil ostracods that include preserved appendages, or soft parts, have been reported.

The role of experiments in investigating the taphonomy of exceptional preservation

Palaeontology, 2015
Abstract In the last 20 years, much taphonomic experimentation has focused on the interpretation of exceptionally preserved fossils. Decay experiments have been used to interpret the features preserved in soft‐bodied fossils and to determine the sequence of character loss and its impact on phylogenetic position.

Exceptional preservation in calcareous nodules

Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. B, Biological Sciences, 1985
Abstract Preservation of soft integument in calcareous nodules seems to be more widespread geographically and stratigraphically than hitherto realized. It cannot be recognized in the field, and to recover such material requires special etching techniques.

EXCEPTIONAL PRESERVATION OF INSECTS IN LACUSTRINE ENVIRONMENTS

Palaios, 2012
Abstract Insects are diverse and abundant components of most terrestrial ecosystems today and are well represented in the fossil record with first occurrences in the Early Devonian. Fossil deposits that include exceptionally preserved insect assemblages are found in several different types of Lagerstätten, with their preservation in ...

The Exceptional Preservation of Interesting and Informative Biomolecules

The Paleontological Society Papers, 2014
Organic carbon compounds record key aspects of the processes of their formation and mechanisms of preservation and are foci for research into the nature of life on the early Earth and the search for life beyond Earth. Prime in this respect are lipids preserved in sediments and sedimentary rocks that reveal much about the evolutionary trajectory of life

Exceptional Preservation of Memory for Tunes and Lyrics

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2009
Four elderly persons with neurologic impairments of differing etiology and differing cognitive profiles presented unexpected patterns of memory for tunes and song lyrics. Impairments included profound deafness, right‐hemisphere stroke, and dementia of the Alzheimer's type.

Exceptional preservation of marine diatoms in upper Albian amber

Geology, 2009
Late Albian amber from Charente-Maritime (southwestern France) contains the first known marine diatoms preserved in a fossil resin. Approximately 70 inclusions were assignable to the genera Basilicostephanus, Coscinodiscus, Hemiaulus, Melosira, Paralia, Skeletonema, Stephanopyxis, Trochosira, ?Aulacoseira, and to the order Rhizosoleniales. Some of them
