This chapter revisits the concept of excitability, a basic system property of neurons. The focus is on excitable systems regarded as behaviors rather than dynamical systems. By this we mean open systems modulated by specific interconnection properties rather than closed systems classified by their parameter ranges.

Step time response evaluation of different synchronous generator excitation systems
A fast step response of an excitation system is critical for a synchronous generator in order to maintain stability under disturbances in the interconnected power grid.

Validation of the sexual excitation/sexual inhibition inventory for women and men
This is the post-print version of the article. The official published version can be found at the link below. The purpose of the current investigation was to develop a scale that would assess propensity for sexual arousal in response to a broad range of ...

Plasticity during Sleep Is Linked to Specific Regulation of Cortical Circuit Activity
Sleep is thought to be involved in the regulation of synaptic plasticity in two ways: by enhancing local plastic processes underlying the consolidation of specific memories and by supporting global synaptic homeostasis.

Spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are highly localized surface waves that can be supported on metal surfaces with subwavelength decorations. Mode matching and momentum matching have been investigated so as to efficiently excite the spoof SPPs ...

ABSTRACT Pediatric gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (GEP‐NENs) are extremely rare and clinically heterogeneous. Management has largely been extrapolated from adult practice. This European Standard Clinical Practice Guideline (ESCP), developed by the EXPeRT network in collaboration with adult NEN experts, provides (adult) evidence ...

Using novel simplified models of excitation for analytic description of initiation propagation and blockage of excitation waves [PDF]
We consider applications of a recently suggested new asymptotic approach to detailed ionic models of cardiac excitation. First, we describe a three-variable approximation for the excitation fronts in a detailed ionic model of human atrial kinetics.

Excitation-inhibition (E:I) imbalance is theorized as an important pathophysiological mechanism in autism. Autism affects males more frequently than females and sex-related mechanisms (e.g., X-linked genes, androgen hormones) can influence E:I balance ...
