Abstract The new concepts of surface exclusion and geometrical exclusion are clearly defined in this paper. These two fundamental exclusion mechanisms are successfully applied to open-capillary chromatography, hydrodynamic chromatography and sizeexclusion chromatography. The experimental elution volumes are in excellent agreement with predicted data.
