The [2Fe‐2S] cluster of mitochondrial outer membrane protein mitoNEET has an O2‐regulated nitric oxide access tunnel

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The mitochondrial outer membrane iron–sulphur ([Fe‐S]) protein mitoNEET is a target of the type‐2 diabetes drug pioglitazone. Its unknown molecular function is linked to respiratory complex activity and mitochondrial function. We discovered that O2 protects the mitoNEET [2Fe‐2S] cluster against NO oxidation and desensitization towards reduction by H2S.

Citrus Aurantium and caffeine complex versus placebo on biomarkers of metabolism: a double blind crossover design

open access: yesJournal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, 2019
Backgrouond The purpose of this study was to examine resting the metabolic response to the ingestion of a complex containing Citrus Aurantium + Caffeine (CA + C) and if its consumption influences metabolic recovery following a high-intensity anaerobic ...

Predicting Exercise Adherence and Physical Activity in Older Adults Based on Tablet Engagement: A Post-hoc Study [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
Sufficient physical activity can prolong the ability of older adults to live inde-pendently. Community-based exercise programs can be enhanced by regularly performing exercises at home. To support such a home-based exercise program, a blended intervention was developed that combined the use of a tablet application with a personal coach.

Sprint-based exercise and cognitive function in adolescents. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Moderate intensity exercise has been shown to enhance cognition in an adolescent population, yet the effect of high-intensity sprint-based exercise remains unknown and was therefore examined in the present study.

Characterization of fungal carbonyl sulfide hydrolase belonging to clade D β‐carbonic anhydrase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Here, we performed a functional analysis of the fungal enzymes belonging to clade D of the β‐class carbonic anhydrase family (β‐D‐CA). The β‐D‐CAs in the basidiomycete Gloeophyllum trabeum and the ascomycete Trichoderma harzianum showed very low activity in the hydration of CO2 but exhibited high activity in the hydrolysis of carbonyl sulfide (COS ...

A histidine‐rich extension of the mitochondrial F0 subunit ATP6 from the ice worm Mesenchytraeus solifugus increases ATP synthase activity in bacteria

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The glacier ice worm Mesenchytraeus solifugus survives year‐round at 0 °C. Its ATP6 subunit, which forms a regulatory component of the proton pore in mitochondrial ATP synthase, has a carboxy‐terminal extension not found in any other organism examined to date. Here, we show that fusion of this extension to the homologous AtpB protein in E. coli results

Methodological and conceptual limitations in exercise addiction research [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The aim of this brief analytical review is to highlight and disentangle research dilemmas in the field of exercise addiction. Research examining exercise addiction is primarily based on self-reports, obtained by questionnaires (incorporating ...

Inspiratory muscle training enhances pulmonary O2 uptake kinetics and high-intensity exercise tolerance in humans [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Fatigue of the respiratory muscles during intense exercise might compromise leg blood flow, thereby constraining oxygen uptake (VO2) and limiting exercise tolerance. We tested the hypothesis that inspiratory muscle training (IMT) would reduce inspiratory

Elucidation of interface interactions between a dehydratase domain and an acyl carrier protein in cremimycin polyketide synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In modular polyketide synthases, the dehydratase (DH) domain catalyzes the dehydration reaction of the β‐hydroxyacyl unit attached to the cognate acyl carrier protein (ACP) domain. However, it is unclear how DH interacts with ACP during the reaction. In this study, we identified DH–ACP interface residues, providing the first detailed insights into DH ...

Acute effects of Nitrosigine® and citrulline malate on vasodilation in young adults

open access: yesJournal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, 2020
Background Athletes are increasingly exploring ways to enhance their physical performance. Increasing blood flow to the working tissues through endothelium-dependent vasodilation is one factor athletes use to realize these results.
