One size does not fit all: An in vitro evaluation of the effects of bezafibrate and medroxyprogesterone acetate on human SH‐SY5Y and U‐87 MG cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Drugs previously repurposed to target blood cancers reduced neuroblastoma and glioblastoma cell growth and viability. However, their levels of anticancer activity were different and their clinical application may be problematic due to side effects at effective doses.

Influence of the Development History of Nozzle Wall Boundary Layer upon Wave Generation on a Liquid Jet Free Surface

open access: yesJournal of Fluid Science and Technology, 2009
The relation between the development of the wall boundary layer in a convergent nozzle and free surface waves on the emanated liquid jet has been investigated experimentally.

Time‐restricted feeding prior to Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection reduces tissue CD4+ T cells with limited impact on bacterial clearance

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Time‐restricted feeding (TRF) in mice increased liver fatty acid oxidation and decreased fatty acid biosynthesis. These alterations persisted when TRF was discontinued and the host was infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Pre‐exposure to TRF did not alter tissue (lung and spleen) mycobacterial burden but significantly reduced CD3+ T cells in lungs

Design of novel microfluidic concentration gradient generators suitable for linear and exponential concentration ranges

open access: yes, 2012
A novel microfluidic concentration gradient generator is designed where secondary flow, induced via a surface groove, is used to yield a concentration gradient across the output of the microfluidic device.

Exit without choice: interpretable machine learning unlocks the structural drivers of smallholder dispossession in Pakistan

open access: yesAgricultural and Food Economics
In Pakistan’s evolving agricultural landscape, smallholder farmers are increasingly exiting farming, not by choice but under structural pressure. This study investigates the underlying associations using an integrated machine learning and econometric ...

Effect of Nozzle Contour on Flow Separation in Overexpanded Rocket Nozzles

open access: yesJournal of Fluid Science and Technology, 2007
In the present paper, parametric numerical analyses of the separated transonic flows in overexpanded rocket nozzles are conducted. Several types of nozzles are examined numerically to clarify the detailed mechanisms of the occurrence of restricted shock ...

Cyclic azapeptide CD36 ligand attenuates cardiac injury and reduces long‐chain fatty acid accumulation after myocardial ischemia–reperfusion in mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In a murine model of myocardial ischemia and reperfusion (MI/R), the CD36 azapeptide ligand MPE‐298 reduces cardiac injury and transiently lowers left ventricular long‐chain fatty acids (LCFAs) accumulation 3 h after reperfusion, accompanied by a decrease of oxidative stress and inflammation‐associated genes' expression in the heart and adipose tissue.

Hyperosmotic stress‐induced redistribution of pre‐mRNA cleavage factor I subunits is associated with shifts in alternative polyadenylation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Hyperosmotic stress triggers the relocation of the CFIm complex from the nucleus to the cytoplasm. This shift creates a nuclear ‘stoichiometric bottleneck’, limiting CFIm availability for mRNA processing. Consequently, specific mRNAs like NUDT21 and DICER1 undergo targeted 3′UTR shortening, demonstrating how spatial protein dynamics drive rapid ...

Controlling Seepage Flow Beneath Hydraulic Structures: Effects of Floor Openings and Sheet Pile Wall Cracks

open access: yesBuildings
Using one opening (filter) within the floors of hydraulic structures is a known technique to relieve the seepage effects on their floors. In this study, a new method to control seepage flow by using two identical filters instead of one was tackled ...

Smoluchowski–Kramers approximation and large deviations for infinite-dimensional nongradient systems with applications to the exit problem

open access: yesThe Annals of Probability, 2016
In this paper, we study the quasi-potential for a general class of damped semilinear stochastic wave equations. We show that, as the density of the mass converges to zero, the infimum of the quasi-potential with respect to all possible velocities converges to the quasi-potential of the corresponding stochastic heat equation, that one obtains from the ...
