Transcriptomic and genomic changes associated with radioadaptation in Exophiala dermatitidis

open access: yesComputational and Structural Biotechnology Journal, 2020
Melanized fungi have been isolated from some of the harshest radioactive environments, and their ability to thrive in these locations is in part due to the pigment melanin. Melanin imparts a selective advantage to fungi by providing a physical shield, a chemical shield, and possibly a signaling mechanism.

Genomic and Ecological Flexibility Shape the Global Distribution of a Black Fungus

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 28, Issue 4, April 2026.
Graphical abstract illustrating the integration of ecological and genomic data to explain the global adaptation of the black fungus Elasticomyces elasticus. ABSTRACT Black fungi are among the most stress‐resistant organisms known, yet the genetic and ecological foundations of their extraordinary resilience remain poorly understood.

Exploring the Habitability of the Outer Solar System Icy Moons for the Extremotolerant Yeast Rhodotorula frigidalcoholis

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 28, Issue 2, February 2026.
We investigated the survival of the yeast Rhodotorula frigidalcoholis and analysed its RNA after exposure to icy moon conditions. Our results show how the yeast can tolerate the extreme conditions and performs metabolic functions under the exposure conditions; for example, by halting the cell cycle in order to repair. Created in BioRender.

Current Understanding of Meningitis Pathogens, Immunity Gap, and Future Prevention Strategies in Sri Lanka: A Narrative Review

open access: yesInternational Journal of Microbiology, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Meningitis, an acute and life‐threatening inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord caused primarily by bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic infections, remains a major global health challenge, causing significant morbidity and mortality, particularly among children and vulnerable populations.

Multidisciplinary management of disseminated Exophiala dermatitidis mycosis in an infant with mixed phenotype acute leukemia: a case report

open access: yesBMC Infectious Diseases, 2022
Background Exophiala dermatitidis is a dematiaceous fungus isolated from various environmental sources. Systemic E. dermatitidis infections can lead to fatal outcomes, and treatment has not yet been standardized. Although E. dermatitidis is also known to

A Survey of the Microbial Presence and Growth in Tunnel Pasteurizers of the Beverage Industry

open access: yesJournal of Food Processing and Preservation, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
The aim of this descriptive study is to survey the microbial presence and growth in tunnel pasteurizers of the beer and beverage industry. Whole container pasteurization is used to treat products after filling to ensure shelf‐life stability when no aseptic procedures are followed and the products are susceptible to microbial spoilage.

Development of IgG antibodies to Exophiala dermatitidis is associated with inflammatory responses in patients with cystic fibrosis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
BackgroundThe clinical importance of airway colonisation by the fungus Exophiala dermatitidis in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) is unclear. We have previously shown that E. dermatitidis frequently colonises the airways of patients with CF.

Exophiala(Wangiella)dermatitidiskeratitis after keratoplasty [PDF]

open access: yesMedical Mycology, 1999
We report the first French case of an intraocular infection due to Exophiala (Wangiella) dermatitidis. Two months after a second corneal transplant for congenital hereditary endothelial dystrophy, the patient presented with ocular pain and corneal infiltrates leading to the graft rejection.

Abhängigkeit der Phagozytose, des Oxidativen Bursts und des Killings durch neutrophile Granulozyten von Melanin und Carotenoiden bei Exophiala dermatitidis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
The black melanized yeast Exophiala dermatitidis is a potentially pathogenic fungus frequently isolated from patients suffering from phaeohyphomycosis. Whereas the synthesis and the redox properties of melanin have been studied intensively, the influence

Fish Pathogens and Associated Zoonotic Risks in Aquaculture: A Global One Health Perspective

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, Volume 5, Issue 6, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Aquaculture sector is a key contributor to global food and nutritional security, yet its rapid intensification has heightened concerns about the emergence and spread of zoonotic fish pathogens that threaten human, animal and environmental health.
