Long‐term changes in functional diversity and its implications for mammalian conservation and ecological restoration in a grassland ecosystem

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Paleontological data provide information on natural environments prior to human influence, which are useful for tracking changes in ecosystem functioning through time. During the Late Pleistocene, about 10% of terrestrial mammalian species were extinct in South America.

Multi‐trophic bottom‐up effects of plant functional diversity on arthropod communities in a tropical forest restoration experiment

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Plant diversity affects both ecosystem functioning and the functional and taxonomic diversity of multiple trophic levels. However, in the literature, it is unclear if this pattern is driven by species richness per se or by the functional diversity or composition (e.g ...

Belowground effects of ground‐dwelling large herbivores in forest ecosystems

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
This study reviews how ground‐dwelling large herbivores affect forest soil and litter globally. Effects are context‐dependent, vary among species and forest types, and remain poorly studied in tropical forests, highlighting critical gaps in understanding nutrient cycling and ecosystem functioning.
