Odrazy teoretických antropologických koncepcí v obrazech etnického turismu na Sumbě

open access: yesAntropoWebzin, 2012
Many theoretical concepts formed in social sciences in virtue of intercultural contacts are nowadays perceived as obsolete. Romanticizing, exoticizing or primitivist images were coupled to „foreign and remote societies“ as far back as in 15th century ...

We, the others: construction of the exotic and consumption of brazilian fashion in France

open access: yesHorizontes Antropológicos
This article discusses the consumption of Brazilian products - especially fashion and clothing - in France as a way of consuming the exotic. Drawing on ten months of fieldwork in France, I engage data collected there with my experience from previous ...

Debussy’s Old Hindu Chant (La Boîte à joujoux): Exotic Humorous Fakery and Rejuvenation of Music

open access: yesDe Musica Disserenda
Debussy’s ballet for children La Boîte à joujoux (1913) contains a fake “Old Hindu chant”. But the comic fakery seems to provide the key to understanding the deep meaning of the ballet, in which Debussy strives to rejuvenate and revitalize Western music ...

Leisure Traveling for 21st Century Americans: Mass Tourism as a Cultural Trap

open access: yesAmerican, British and Canadian Studies Journal, 2014
The majority of mass men in the American environment exhibit predictable and similar patterns of behavior as tourists. Pre-Industrial Revolution modes of traveling as liberation and exploration are now thwarted by the leveling effect of globalization and

A Chiral Saddle‐Shaped Nanographene With Two Heptagon‐Embedded [4]Helicenes

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, EarlyView.
We present a novel synthetic strategy toward a chiral saddle‐shaped nanographene (cSNG) via a two‐step oxidation of a prochiral anthracene precursor. The Scholl‐type oxidation first yields a key intermediate with sp3‐defect heptagons, and subsequent oxidative dehydrogenation affords fully conjugated cSNG.

A cost‐effective DNA extraction protocol for long‐read sequencing in non‐model plants

open access: yesApplications in Plant Sciences, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise Third‐generation sequencing has revolutionized genomics, enabling in‐depth analysis of genome sequence, structure, and epigenetic features. Yet, extracting high‐quality DNA for long‐read sequencing remains a bottleneck—particularly in non‐model plants, such as mature trees growing in natural environments, which often contain abundant ...

Emergent Spin Hall Quantization and High‐Order van Hove singularities in Square‐Octagonal MA2Z4

open access: yesAdvanced Physics Research, EarlyView.
Square‐octagonal MA2Z4 (M = Mo/W, A = Si/Ge, Z = pnictogen) monolayers are predicted to realize quantum spin Hall insulators with nearly quantized spin Hall conductivity enabled by an emergent spin U(1) quasi‐symmetry. Materials with Z = As and Sb host quasi‐flat bands with high‐order van Hove singularities near the Fermi level, making them promising ...
