Application of Expanded Event Trees combined with uncertainty analysis methodologies

open access: yesReliability Engineering and System Safety, 2021
Abstract During the last decades, the safety analysis of nuclear power plants, have been shifting from conservative models and hypotheses to Best Estimate. Within this trend, the different safety analyses can be categorized depending on their associated conservatisms.

Moment-Constrained Maximum Entropy Method for Expanded Uncertainty Evaluation

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2018
The probability distribution is often sought in engineering for the purpose of expanded uncertainty evaluation and reliability analysis. Although there are various methods available to approximate the distribution, one of the commonly used ones is the method based on statistical moments (or cumulants). Given these parameters, the corresponding solution

Uncertainties in greenhouse gases inventories – expanding our perspective [PDF]

open access: yesClimatic Change, 2014
Strategies for mitigating global climate change require accurate estimates of the emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs). A strong consensus in the global scientific community states that efforts to control climate change require stabilization of the atmospheric concentration of GHGs (as per a recent compilation; (IPCC 2013)). Estimates of the amounts of

Considering uncertainties expands the lower tail of maize yield projections

open access: yesPLOS ONE, 2021
Crop yields are sensitive to extreme weather events. Improving the understanding of the mechanisms and the drivers of the projection uncertainties can help to improve decisions. Previous studies have provided important insights, but often sample only a small subset of potentially important uncertainties.

Screening Before We Know: Radical Uncertainties in Expanded Prenatal Genetics [PDF]

open access: yesOBM Genetics, 2021
In this article, we discuss the radical uncertainties unleashed by expanded prenatal genetics. We show how we are now routinely screening fetuses in the absence of two essential sorts of information. At the population level, we do not have sound, unbiased data about the prevalence, penetrance, and clinical variability of most mutations. At the level of

Expanding boundaries in psychiatry: uncertainty in the context of diagnosis‐seeking and negotiation [PDF]

open access: yesSociology of Health & Illness, 2019
AbstractPsychiatric diagnosis has become pervasive in modern culture, exerting an increasing influence on notions of personhood, identity practices and forms of self‐governing. The broadening of diagnostic categories and increasing awareness regarding popular diagnostic categories has led to an increased demand for formal diagnosis within clinical ...

Entropic uncertainty in the background of expanding de Sitter space-time [PDF]

open access: yesQuantum Information Processing, 2020
We study the dynamics of quantum-memory-assisted entropic uncertainty for a hybrid qutrit-qubit system interacting with fluctuating quantum scalar field in the background of expanding de Sitter space. We firstly derive the master equation that the system evolution obeys.

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Evaluation of expanded uncertainty at glass thermometer calibration

open access: yesUkrainian Metrological Journal, 2019
A method for calibrating a glass thermometer is investigated and a procedure for measurement uncertainty evaluation based on the kurtosis method is developed. The correlation between the indication of the reference and calibrated thermometers at uncertainty evaluation is taken into account.
