Factors influencing the educational expectations of Chinese youth

open access: yesJournal of Research, Policy & Practice of Teachers & Teacher Education
In China, education is an indispensable part of the growth of teenagers, and the results of education are also the achievements that teenagers should achieve at this stage. Educational expectation as a socio-psychological variable has an important impact

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

The Role of Expectations, Hype and Ethics in Neuroimaging and Neuromodulation Futures

open access: yesFrontiers in Systems Neuroscience, 2014
The production of expectations or future-goals for the development of techniques which read and modulate brain function, represent an important practical tool for neuroscientists.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Political Trust as Modest Expectations: 'Exploring Immigrants’ Falling Confidence in Swedish Political Institutions'

open access: yesNordic Journal of Migration Research, 2015
Political trust among immigrants in Western Europe seems to be surprisingly high, especially among immigrants from non-democratic countries with institutions plagued by corruption. Over time, however, trust tends to diminish among these individuals.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

What to Expect When You’re Expecting Zika [PDF]

open access: yesCell Host & Microbe, 2017
The 2015 emergence of Zika virus (ZIKV) in the Americas brought new attention to this previously obscure virus. Experimental model systems have been instrumental in rapidly advancing our understanding of ZIKV pathogenesis. Here, Lazear looks back on the events leading to the development of the ZIKV mouse model reported in Cell Host & Microbe.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.
