The first experimental diabetes mellitus

Acta Diabetologica Latina, 1989
In the history of diabetes research, surgically induced experimental diabetes is usually associated with the names of Minkowski and von Mering on the basis of their investigations in 1889. However, temporary diabetes mellitus had already been induced 200 years previously by Johann Conrad Brunner (1653-1727) in an experiment in dogs.

Blood rheology in experimental diabetes mellitus

Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine, 1993
Electrical break-down and erythrocyte membrane potential and blood viscosity and elasticity were studied on the model of experimental alloxan diabetes on days 7 and 14 of the experiment. Changed membrane elasticity was revealed in both terms, more evident changes in the second term, on day 14.

Magnesium Metabolism in Experimental Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes, 1977
One of the consequences of uncontrolled diabetes mellitus (DM) is an increased urinary loss of magnesium. Some of the factors determining this electrolyte imbalance were studied in growing rats with experimentally induced DM. Two sets of experiments were performed in which dietary magnesium intake was the variable.

Insulin Resistance in Experimental Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine, 2021
Experimental type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) was induced in rats by daily intraperitoneal injections of alloxan in a dose of 90 mg/kg for 4 days. For verification of insulin resistance, insulin tolerance test was performed in 2 weeks and the glucose utilization rate constant (KITT) was calculated.

Distal neuropathy in experimental diabetes mellitus

Annals of Neurology, 1980
AbstractAlthough nerve conduction slowing is a well‐accepted abnormality in rats with acute experimental diabetes, reports of neuropathological changes in diabetic rat nerves have been inconsistent. To examine this further, we studied electrophysiological and morphological features of posterior tibial nerves and their distal branches from four‐week ...

Intestinal hyperemia in experimental diabetes mellitus

American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology, 1987
Intestinal blood flows were measured using the radioactive microsphere technique in anesthetized, fasted (18–24 h) rats 4 wk after administration of streptozotocin (65 mg/kg body wt) or its vehicle. Blood flow was increased along the length of the small bowel in diabetic rats relative to normal animals.

Characteristics of Proteinuria in Experimental Diabetes Mellitus

Biochemical Medicine and Metabolic Biology, 1994
An impairment of protein charge selectivity has been invoked to explain the initial anionic proteinuria in diabetic nephropathy. The aims of this work were to investigate charge and size protein perm-selectivity abnormalities in experimental diabetes and to monitor these changes over time after diabetes induction.

Fatty Acid Desaturation in Experimental Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes, 1979
Microsomal fatty acid desaturation is defective in streptozotocin-induced experimental diabetes. This defect is correctable by insulin treatment. The electron transport chain needed for microsomal fatty acid desaturation was studied in liver microsomes of streptozotocin diabetic rats, and the defect was localized to the terminal desaturase enzyme ...

Intestinal capillary filtration in experimental diabetes mellitus

American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology, 1987
There is indirect evidence that indicates that intestinal transcapillary fluid and solute exchange is significantly altered in diabetes mellitus. To directly assess the dynamics of microvascular fluid and solute exchange in the small intestine (jejunum-ileum), we measured lymph flow, capillary pressure, capillary filtration coefficient, plasma and ...

Microvascular Anastomotic Thrombosis in Experimental Diabetes Mellitus

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 1997
An experimental model was developed to investigate the effects of glycemic control and pentoxifylline administration on microvascular anastomotic patency rates in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Diabetes was confirmed by blood glucose levels of more than 300 mg/dl prior to administering insulin and/or pentoxifylline.
