2009Abstract This chapter describes the main facilities used for the study of non-equilibrium flows, especially shock tubes and shock tunnels. The principles of shock tube operation are first reviewed and the disturbing processes, such as boundary layer effects, finite duration of diaphragm opening and transition are analysed.
