Functional variation among LPMOs revealed by the inhibitory effects of cyanide and buffer ions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, Volume 599, Issue 9, Page 1317-1336, May 2025.
This study addresses the inhibition of lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs) by cyanide and explains how and why the magnitude of observed inhibitory effects depends on the way LPMO reactions are setup and on the type of LPMO. Enzymes known as lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs) are mono‐copper polysaccharide‐degrading peroxygenases that ...

Associations between physical multimorbidity patterns and common mental health disorders in middle-aged adults: A prospective analysis using data from the UK Biobank

open access: yesThe Lancet Regional Health. Europe, 2021
Background: We aimed to identify specific patterns of physical multimorbidity, defined as the presence of two or more physical long-term conditions, and to examine the extent to which these specific patterns could predict future incident and persistent ...

Ablation of LRP6 in alpha‐smooth muscle actin‐expressing cells abrogates lung inflammation and fibrosis upon bleomycin‐induced lung injury

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Low‐density lipoprotein receptor‐related protein 6 (LRP6) is a key receptor for the Wnt antagonist Dickkopf1 (DKK1). DKK1 protein expression is induced in a bleomycin (BLM)‐induced lung injury model. We show that DKK1 induces proinflammatory and profibrotic genes in lung fibroblasts.

A Comparative Usability Study of Two-Factor Authentication [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Two-factor authentication (2F) aims to enhance resilience of password-based authentication by requiring users to provide an additional authentication factor, e.g., a code generated by a security token. However, it also introduces non-negligible costs for

Characteristics of the Kelch domain containing (KLHDC) subfamily and relationships with diseases

open access: yesFEBS Letters, Volume 599, Issue 8, Page 1094-1112, April 2025.
The Kelch protein superfamily includes 63 members, with the KLHDC subfamily having 10 proteins. While their functions are not fully understood, recent advances in KLHDC2's structure and role in protein degradation have highlighted its potential for drug development, especially in PROTAC therapies.

The apo LETM1 F‐EF‐hand adopts a closed conformation that underlies a multi‐modal sensory role in mitochondria

open access: yesFEBS Letters, Volume 599, Issue 7, Page 971-988, April 2025.
We present the first solution structure of the Ca2+‐depleted LETM1 F‐EF‐hand through a D676A/N678A Ca2+ binding‐deficient mutant, revealing a closed hydrophobic cleft caused by a unique F1‐helix pivot. The apo LETM1 F‐EF‐hand exhibits regiospecific hot and cold unfolding, sensitivity to physiological pH changes and potential for promiscuous heterotypic
