Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Solar Facade Module for Nearly Zero Energy Building. Extended Test Period

open access: yesEnvironmental and Climate Technologies, 2020
The study presented in this paper is a continued research of preceding tests of small-scale passive solar wall module to explore 1) the behaviour of solar wall module in various setups for an extended 48-hour period of time, and 2) the performance of ...

The pyruvate generator is a common phenomenon in mitochondria from different rat and mouse brain regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The pyruvate generator, which causes activation of respiration by extra‐mitochondrial Ca2+, is also present and functional in rat brainstem mitochondria, as it is in other brain regions. This finding is confirmed by experiments with a fully reconstituted malate–aspartate shuttle (MAS).

Extended Dislocations in Plastically Deformed Metallic Nanoparticles

open access: yes, 2016
In the present study, the sawtooth nature of compressive loading of metallic nanoparticles is observed using a molecular dynamics simulation. The atomic structure evolution confirmed that extended dislocations are the main defects split into two ...

The ubiquitin‐proteasome system and autophagy as guardians of the cellular proteome

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This Perspective covers the three principles governing the crosstalk between the ubiquitin‐proteasome system and autophagy in cellular proteostasis: (1) a shared ubiquitin code routing substrates via shuttle factors or autophagy receptors; (2) spatial compartmentalization into phase‐separated degradation hubs and organelle‐specific modules (exemplified

Online Estimation of Three-Phase Induction Motor Parameters Using an Extended Kalman Filter for Energy Saving

open access: yesEnergies
In this paper, the online estimation of three-phase induction motor parameters using an extended Kalman filter for energy saving is proposed. The optimal value of the stator current on the d-axis is calculated to obtain the minimum power loss.

Laetoli footprints preserve earliest direct evidence of human-like bipedal biomechanics.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2010
BackgroundDebates over the evolution of hominin bipedalism, a defining human characteristic, revolve around whether early bipeds walked more like humans, with energetically efficient extended hind limbs, or more like apes with flexed hind limbs.

Nonlinear Energy Harvesting [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The concept of harvesting electrical energy from ambient vibration sources has been a popular topic of research in recent years. The motivation behind this research is largely due to recent advancements in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS ...

An unexpected alternative viologen electron mediator site in tungsten‐containing formate dehydrogenase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
An unexpected alternative interaction site for ethyl viologen was identified in formate dehydrogenase 1 from Methylorubrum extorquens. Combined mutagenesis, kinetic analysis, and docking revealed that aromatic residues near an iron–sulfur cluster enable flavin mononucleotide‐independent electron transfer, offering a framework for engineering improved ...
