Evaluation of the Potential of Laser Shock Peening Compared with Cold Expansion for Improving Fatigue Resistance of Riveted Lap Joints of Aerospace Grade 7175 Al Alloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser shock peening for enhancing fatigue performance of riveted aerospace aluminum joints. A comparative approach with cold expansion combines fatigue testing and synchrotron X‐ray methods. Integrating mechanical testing with residual stress and strain characterization provides insights into how different treatments affect the ...

Additive Manufacturing of Gradient Stiffness Honeycombs Using Thermoplastic Polyurethane Composite Material Variations

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
By combining porous, solid, and carbon fiber‐reinforced thermoplastic polyurethane within a single 3D printed honeycomb structure, this current work achieved precise control over spatial stiffness while ensuring strong interlayer adhesion. The findings demonstrate enhanced energy absorption and densification strain, outperforming traditional uniform ...

The improvement of crack propagation modelling in triangular 2D structures using the extended finite element method

open access: yesFatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures, 2018
In this paper, a novel geometric method combined with the piecewise linear function method is introduced into the extended finite element method (XFEM) to determine the crack tip element and crack surface element.

X‐Ray Tomography Analysis of Damage Mechanisms in Metal Matrix Syntactic Foams During Compression

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
In situ synchrotron X‐ray tomography is used to investigate the internal damage mechanisms of AlSi12 metal matrix syntactic foam with ceramic hollow spheres during compressive loading. It is concluded that a homogeneous distribution of the second‐phase filler material results in a sequential collapse in a localized region; this leads to controlled and ...

A New Linearized Crank-Nicolson Mixed Element Scheme for the Extended Fisher-Kolmogorov Equation

open access: yesThe Scientific World Journal, 2013
We present a new mixed finite element method for solving the extended Fisher-Kolmogorov (EFK) equation. We first decompose the EFK equation as the two second-order equations, then deal with a second-order equation employing finite element method, and ...

Gradient plasticity crack tip characterization by means of the extended finite element method [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Strain gradient plasticity theories are being widely used for fracture assessment, as they provide a richer description of crack tip fields by incorporating the influence of geometrically necessary dislocations.

Experimental Analysis and Physics‐Based Analytical Model on Twisted and Coiled Artificial Muscles

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Twisted and coiled artificial muscles made from silver‐coated nylon fibers are investigated through experiments and analytical modeling. The actuators achieve contractions up to 19.3% and specific work of 8 kJ kg−1, though efficiency remains limited (≈0.15%) by thermal losses.
