Strengthening of Concrete Beams by External Prestressing

The use of external prestressing tendons as a means of strengthening or upgrading concrete flexural members was experimentally investigated. 16 beam specimens were first subjected to cyclic fatigue loading at a constant load range to induce fatigue deformations.

The authors analyze the non-linear behaviour of composite concrete-steel beams prestressed by external tendons which are free to slip along their path defined by a finite number of saddle points with zero friction in order to examine the failure modalities for the most common static schemes and for the most common construction sequences.
