Dense suspension of solid particles as a new heat transfer fluid for concentrated solar thermal plants: on-sun proof of concept [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This paper demonstrates the capacity of dense suspensions of solid particles to transfer concentrated solar power from a tubular receiver to an energy conversion process by acting as a heat transfer fluid.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

A High-Multi Target Resolution Focal Plane Array-Based Laser Detection and Ranging Sensor

open access: yesSensors, 2019
This paper introduces a digital-assisted multiple echo detection scheme, which utilizes the waste time of the full serial data readout period in a focal plane array (FPA)-based laser detection and ranging (LADAR) receiver. With the support of an external

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Transcriptional network analysis of PTEN‐protein‐deficient prostate tumors reveals robust stromal reprogramming and signs of senescent paracrine communication

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Combining PTEN protein assessment and transcriptomic profiling of prostate tumors, we uncovered a network enriched in senescence and extracellular matrix (ECM) programs associated with PTEN loss and conserved in a mouse model. We show that PTEN‐deficient cells trigger paracrine remodeling of the surrounding stroma and this information could help ...

Characterisation of the Wind Convection Losses in Plain and Ribbed Tubes of Solar Central Receivers via Tube-Resolved CFD Simulations

open access: yesSolarPACES Conference Proceedings
Convective losses due to wind affect the thermal efficiency of external central receivers of solar power towers (SPT), but their full characterization is still an unresolved question.

The short-term effects of antenna insulation thickness on path losses in wireless telemetry implants at microwave frequencies

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Translational Myology, 2013
Various physiological parameters can be monitored non-invasively using wireless biotelemetry links. The development of sophisticated ultra low power consuming transceivers allows the transmission of large amounts of data from the inside of the body to an

Design and simulation of 1.28 Tbps dense wavelength division multiplex system suitable for long haul backbone [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Wavelength division multiplex (WDM) system with on / off keying (OOK) modulation and direct detection (DD) is generally simple to implement, less expensive and energy efficient. The determination of the possible design capacity limit, in terms of the bit
