Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has frequent and sometimes lethal thrombotic complications. The role that activated platelets, leukocytes, and small (0.3‐micron to 1‐micron) extracellular vesicles (EVs) play in ECMO thrombosis is not well ...

Prolonged Extracorporeal Circulation [PDF]
Interest in prolonged perfusions has increased pari passu with the possibility of treating the more complicated cardiac deformities. Prolonged perfusions may be of interest also in functional disturbances arising during operations using the heart-lung machine, since it may be difficult to discontinue the perfusion before cardiac function is again ...

Studies on an antifibrinolytic agent trans-AMCHA [PDF]
Lysis of fibrin was first recognized by MORGAGNI in 1769, observing a liquid blood in a patient of acute death, and the phenomenon was named as fibrinolysis by DASTRE in 1893.

Extracorporeal support for patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome. [PDF]
Extracorporeal membrane oxygen (ECMO) has been used for many years in patients with life-threatening hypoxaemia and/or hypercarbia. While early trials demonstrated that it was associated with poor outcomes and extensive haemorrhage, the technique has ...

Low-energy shock wave for enhancing recruitment of endothelial progenitor cells: a new modality to increase efficacy of cell therapy in chronic hind limb ischemia [PDF]
Background— Stem and progenitor cell therapy is a novel approach to improve neovascularization and function of ischemic tissue. Enhanced tissue expression of chemoattractant factors such as stromal cell–derived factor 1 and vascular endothelial growth ...

MANNITOL AND EXTRACORPOREAL CIRCULATION
SUMMARY An investigation of the effects of mannitol has been carried out to evaluate its routine use in open-heart surgery. An in vitro study suggested that increased osmolarity produced by the drug reduced mechanical hemolysis. This was not confirmed in a controlled clinical study when mannitol was used in the pump prime.
