New Findings on Pulsatile ECMO: Verification of the Potential to Improve Antithrombogenicity of a Membrane Oxygenator Using Pump‐Generated Pulsatile Flow in an Innovative Animal Model

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
Compared to the steady flow circuit, the pulse flow circuit showed a clear trend of less thrombus formation inside the membrane oxygenator. ABSTRACT Background Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) provides mechanical circulatory and respiratory support.

292. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for refractory cardiogenic shock: a bridge to decision?

open access: yesCirugía Cardiovascular, 2012
Cardiogenic shock refractory to conventional therapy has very high mortality and limited therapeutical options. Aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of the use of ECMO as a life-saving measure when optimal conventional treatment has been reached ...

Machine Learning‐Based Prediction of Life‐Threatening Complications During Hemodialysis in Hospitalized Patients With Poor General Conditions

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
A machine learning model using predialysis data predicted sudden events during or after hemodialysis with high accuracy (auROC: 0.889). The key predictors included emergency hospitalization, recent surgery, high heart rate, low albumin levels, and high CRP.

Towards the design and implementation of a human circulatory system for Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation simulation

open access: yesEgyptian Journal of Critical Care Medicine, 2018
Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is a lifesaving procedure developed for the care of patients with short-term respiratory and/or cardiac issues (MacLaren et al., 2011).

Outcomes for Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia in Three Decades: A Report From a UK Surgical Centre

open access: yesActa Paediatrica, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aims Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is associated with lung hypoplasia, pulmonary hypertension and high mortality. Three decades experience from a UK centre is reported. Methods Medical records of CDH newborns between February 1990 and November 2021 and attending a multidisciplinary clinic were examined. Survival and health outcomes are

Surgical embolectomy for acute massive pulmonary embolism: state of the art [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Massive pulmonary embolism (PE) is a severe condition that can potentially lead to death caused by right ventricular (RV) failure and the consequent cardiogenic shock.

Low ICU Admission and Excellent Outcomes in MIS‐C: A Swedish Study From an Open Society

open access: yesActa Paediatrica, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aim During the COVID‐19 pandemic, Sweden chose a more open public health approach. A general concern was that this approach would affect the population negatively. We describe the Swedish national MIS‐C cohort and risk factors for severe disease defined as admission to the intensive care unit and cardiogenic shock.

Geographic access to high capability severe acute respiratory failure centers in the United States [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Objective: Optimal care of adults with severe acute respiratory failure requires specific resources and expertise. We sought to measure geographic access to these centers in the United States. Design: Cross-sectional analysis of geographic access to high
