Histochemistry of Human Extraocular Muscle

A reliable method for evaluating biopsy specimens of human extraocular muscles is presented to better understand the pathological responses of these highly organized striated muscles. Three muscle fiber types and their distribution are described with morphological and histochemical measurements used commonly for limb muscle.

Thirty-three rectus superior extraocular muscles from 23 autopsy cases, all over 60 years, were examined. Eosinophilic inclusions (Hirano bodies) were observed in all the muscles; they were stained deep red by Masson's trichrome stain and were positive for protein stain.
