Penalization includes all those methods apart from total occlusion which disturb the central vision of one eye by favouring the other eye. Penalization has a sensory action on functional amblyopia; moreover it also has a motor action, influencing the non-accommodative element of spasm in esotropia.

Strabismus and meningomyelocele
Documenta Ophthalmologica, 1981About a half of a group of patients with meningomyelocele have some form of squint. The occurrence of squint appears to be related to the occurrence of hydrocephalus. The incidence of squint increases with the existence of epileptic symptoms and with a low level of intelligence. Amblyopia is seldom seen in the patients with convergent squint.

We have discussed what constitutes a normal visual and ocular system in children and the inherent mechanisms that help each person develop and maintain normal visual function. This ideal status should include good visual acuity in each eye, straight eyes, and the development of fusion.

This year's review of the literature on comitant strabismus is presented. The main problems in treating strabismus disorders are accurately diagnosing the condition and designing effective treatment plans. A better understanding of the underlying motility disorder facilitates a better treatment outcome.

Epilepsia, 1965
SUMMARYA significantly increased number of squints was found in patients suffering from symptomatic epilepsy. It is suggested that birth injury may be a commoner cause of epilepsy than is generally realised.RÉSUMÉUne proportion significativement élevée de strabismes a été rencontrée chez les sujets souffrant d'épilepsie symptomatique.

Two hundred twenty-six consecutive surgical ptosis cases were carefully evaluated to establish the incidence of strabismus in ptosis. The overall incidence of strabismus in surgical ptosis patients was found to be 36%. Most remarkable were the findings in 113 congenital ptosis patients; 32% of these patients were found to have strabismus.

Strabismus in craniosynostosis
Current Opinion in Ophthalmology, 2006To present peer-reviewed articles related to strabismus in craniosynostosis.Improved neurosurgical treatment has resulted in amblyopia replacing optic atrophy as the main cause of visual impairment in Apert's and Crouzon syndromes. Patients with nonsyndromic craniosynostosis have an increased incidence of significant refractive error and horizontal ...

This article briefly overviews the recent literature regarding comitant strabismus. The evaluation and management of esodeviations and exodeviations, which are still topical questions today, are discussed. Several relevant basic studies focus on the prevalence and the role of sensory mechanisms in the clinical findings of essential infantile esotropia.

A review of the literature on comitant strabismus of the period from April 1999 until April 2000 is presented. A rather new and increasingly important issue is the psychosocial aspect of strabismus. Two studies have demonstrated that strabismus creates a significant negative social prejudice on the patients and that it can significantly reduce an ...
