Concomitant exotropia is a common chronic eye disease characterized by abnormal movement of the extraocular muscles caused by a functional imbalance of the nerves related to the movement of the extraocular muscles. This study revealed that the expression

An autopsy study of a familial oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD) with distal spread and neurogenic involvement [PDF]
An 81-year-old man from a family with a history of oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD) involving 6 members over 4 generations is described. The patient first noted drooping of his eyelids at the age of 65.

Axons Giving Rise to the Palisade Endings of Feline Extraocular Muscles Display Motor Features [PDF]
Palisade endings are nerve specializations found in the extraocular muscles (EOMs) of mammals, including primates. They have long been postulated to be proprioceptors. It was recently demonstrated that palisade endings are cholinergic and that in monkeys

The nonlinearity of passive extraocular muscles [PDF]
Passive extraocular muscles (EOMs), like most biological tissues, are hyperelastic, that is, their stiffness increases as they are stretched. It has always been assumed, and in a few occasions argued, that this is their only nonlinearity and that it can be ignored in central gaze.

A Subset of Palisade Endings Only in the Medial and Inferior Rectus Muscle in Monkey Contain Calretinin [PDF]
Purpose: To further chemically characterize palisade endings in extraocular muscles in rhesus monkeys. Methods: Extraocular muscles of three rhesus monkeys were studied for expression of the calcium-binding protein calretinin (CR) in palisade endings and ...

A double-label study of efferent projections from the Edinger-Westphal nucleus in goldfish and kelp bass [PDF]
The Edinger-Westphal nucleus in goldfish was identified by retrograde labeling from the ciliary ganglion. In the same animals a few neurons near this nucleus (perinuclear Edinger-Westphal neurons) were labeled by a different retrograde tracer injected ...

Metformin Restores Mitochondrial Function and Neurogenesis in POLG Patient‐Derived Brain Organoids
Patient‐derived POLG‐mutant cortical organoids reveal neuronal subtype‐specific mitochondrial and synaptic defects, with dopaminergic neurons most affected. Metformin treatment restores neuronal identity, mitochondrial function, and excitability, increased mtDNA maintenance, and reprogrammed metabolism via TCA and redox pathways.
